A VERY COMPREHENSIVE BOOK!!!

Are you a design- and professional engineer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides the new generation of design engineers with basic theory; a glimpse into the history of mixer technology development; and, to professional engineers, it offers a wealth of material on important publications and patents.

Authors Henderson and Camargo, begin with an introduction to the origins of mixer technology, starting with the prevacuum tube era, up to its golden age in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Next, the authors discuss the application of mixers in systems, along with the parameters associated with mixers. Then, they discuss the modeling of diode, bipolar, and FET devices that apply particulary to use in frequency conversion circuits.
In addition, the authors describe the basic building blocks in mixers, with emphasis on balun theory, one of the most important components in a mixer. They also introduce the basic theory of diode mixers, including the conventional theory by Torrey and Whitmer in the 1940s, the work of Saleh in the 1970s, and the work of Maas in recent years. The authors continue with a summary of patents and major publications on the application of diodes to various topologies and classes of mixers. Next, they deal with the theory of bipolar transistor mixers; as well as, applications. Then, the authors detail the theory of FET mixers and the principles of operation of the FET family for active and passive approaches. In addition, they discuss the applications of passive FET mixers. Finally, the authors present the applications of active FET mixers.

This most excellent book improves the understanding of frequency conversion circuits and provides a platform for those who want to go further and extend the state of the art. Another aspect of this great book is its emphasis on practical applications, counterbalancing the available resources that tend to focus on theoretical aspects, more so than the basic concepts of how devices are used for mixing.

A good story of hypothetical American invasion

The story was a little over the top and some of the characters were definitely over the top. Like the young female lead who was portrayed as a immature little brat of who I came to dislike and wished for her demise. This character should have been a sympathetic one but the author made her into a bitch

This book was hard to put down. The character depth was great. The overall story is captivating. The action was nearly nonstop except when the political and personal stories took over. Fantastic!!!

Just got this for the Kindle. Had the paperback version for years. One of the best of this type of books. Wish Mr. Harry would continue the story. His other books are also worth a look.

About the Author
Amir Levine, M.D. is an adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist and neuroscientist. He graduated from the residency program at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University and for the past few years Amir has been conducting neuroscience research at Columbia under the mentorship of Nobel Prize Laureate Eric Kandel. Amir also has a passion for working with patients and it is in this context, while working with mothers and children in a therapeutic nursery, that he first discovered the power of attachment theory. His clinical work together with his deep understanding of the brain from a neuroscientist’s perspective contribute to his appreciation of attachment theory and its remarkable effectiveness in helping to heal patients. Amir lives in New York City.
Rachel Heller, M.A. studied at Columbia University with some of the most prominent scholars in the field of social psychology. She now works with families and couples as a psychologist in private practice. Rachel lives in Israel.

Should be required reading!

This book really should be required reading for anyone BEFORE they get into a relationship! I've recommended this book to many friends now and every time I recommend the book I make a joke about how humbling it was to read this book. Let me explain.

I've always considered myself, like most people probably do, to be a complicated, layered individual...unable to boxed in or defined by a particular group or belief system!....then I read this book. Never before had I stumbled upon a psychological model that better described my actions, both in and out of the relationship context. With this new found knowledge I was able to objectively identify, understand and eventually begin to correct certain destructive emotional and psychological patterns within the relationship context. That ability has been incredibly important in my most recent relationship...something that I probably would have stepped away from had I not read this book and understood my avoidant attachment style.

The reason I gave this four stars is because the book was so focused on individuals that were NOT in a relationship. My relationship is the classic avoidant & anxious combination. Yet we decided to leverage this new found knowledge to do the hard work necessary for us to achieve a secure / secure relationship! I do believe this is possible, though hard work, and I have seen results first hand in my relationship that support that theory. However, I would have loved to seen a greater portion of this book dedicated to exercises and tools that couples could use who are in the very situation that this book is encouraging you and teaching you to avoid when possible.

life changing book for me!!!

This is so relevant and easy to understand that I read it in 2 days. I can be a very anxious partner, afraid to say anything that might rock the boat. And I can be so anxious that my friend, who is pretty secure, becomes avoidant. "not this again, here we go again" is how he sometime feels witch my constant insecurity.

The 3rd day after getting the book, my friend was feeling stressed and was a tiny bit critical, and I do admit that what I said was poorly worded and warranted his response. but I was afraid this would become the new norm, even though 2016 has been a better year for us. So I told him that I read in the book that when I feel anxious, I need to deal with it by myself, so I could go play cards and he could go home and have some time for himself. He said that sounded good, and then added, "unless it can't be resolved." Because I hadn't been critical of him, he felt safe offering to listen.

The first 30 minutes was his monologue about his own issues that he argues with himself about. I wondered if I was going to get to talk at all! But he wasn't being critical about me, he needed to say all that stuff about himself and his issues, and then he felt safe enough to listen. I was able to minimize my comments from being critical, labeling them as my fears, things I didn't know how to respond to in a helpful way,etc. Many things, he said he could see why I felt that way, or why it was confusing. He did mentioned things he does for me because he cares, but he didn't feel defensive, it was a conversation. Since I didn't blame him for my insecurities, I could even say why some things didn't' seem fair without him feeling attacked. After 3 hours of super communication, we went out to for ice cream to celebrate.

And my challenge continues, as an intimacy junkie, I need to find ways to be intimate that make him feel good, not just intimate as in problem solving.

I absolutely love this book

I absolutely love this book! As someone who is particularly cerebral and not always in touch with his emotions, I found that this book made sense out of MOST my emotional experience throughout my life. As someone with an anxious attachment style, it helped me understand who I was and am, and it let me know that my deepest need as a human being to connect with a special someone is indeed legitimate, as is my need to be reassured in the context of a relationship based on my not-so-ideal former experiences. This book has taught me not only how to have a relationship, even though I once believed I was doomed, and provided deep affirmation in the dark crevices of my heart where I thought no light could shine, it also taught me how to be more authentic in all aspects of life, winning friends and mentors along the way. I cannot highly recommend this book enough, and I have even purchased copies for friends and family. Even almost two years later, I find that I am STILL learning great things from this book, and it indeed distills the finest scholarship of attachment and professional advice on communication I have EVER read. Mark and Michael Polish have written, produced, and directed three feature films: Twin Falls Idaho, Jackpot, and Northfork. Their filmmaking awards and citations include the John Cassavetes Award at the 2002 Independent Spirit Awards and a 2001 Seattle International Film Festival New American Cinema Award. Their films have collectively been nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards. They both live in the Los Angeles area.

Jonathan Sheldon was an associate producer on Northfork and was named head of development for the Polish Brothers' production company. He lives in Los Angeles.

The Ultimate Guide!

I've read both Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel Without a Crew" and John Pierson's "Spike, Mike, Slackers, & Dykes" and they don't come close to the level of detail I found in this book. (And I'm not just saying this because I love their films.) It's everything you need to know about getting a production going, and, thank God, it blows away the notion of screen writing as a 'get rich quick scheme'. This book doesn't teach you how to be a 'player' in 'the biz', it shows you how to make the kind of films you can be proud of, the kind of films people used to make before big money took over (and ruined) Hollywood. It's clear, it's concise, and these guys have the experience to back it up.

Very practical, smart, and compact guide to making indies

Briefly, this book rocks. It's a fascinating combination: three indie filmmakers tell their rise-to-triumph story, while simultaneously teaching you how to make an indie, while simultaneously teaching you tons of industry jargon, while simultaneously passing on some really neat anecdotes mined from their careers.

Although this is NOT AT ALL the goal of the book, if you were to read this guide carefully on a Thursday and take good notes, you could then waltz into a party on a Friday and convince most people there that you were an independent filmmaker.

I hope to make an indie myself, and I will treasure this guide and put it to use. I recommend it highly!

Very entertaining and informative, a good read.

First off I'd like to say that the anecdotal stories and real life experiences made this book a great read, even for someone only mildly interested in the business and art of film making. For anyone that is serious about independent film this book is a must read, not reading a book of this caliber would be plain ignorance on the part of would be film makers or film students.

It's interesting to me how many people invest in stocks and don't read books on investing, or play serious poker and don't read books on poker, I'm always amazed at the arrogance of people that think they don't need help or advice. There are many great "how to" books on the market, some good, some not so great. I don't have experience in the film making business, but I do recognize the sound of an honest voice trying to be helpful and sincere. I think this book has that quality.

I really enjoyed the stories, some of the technical stuff was a bit over my head, but I think I learned a lot, and I love to learn, so I'd recommend the book to beginners for that quality too. Looking for a critique of the book, I'd say I wished there were more details on the money side of things. They mention how expensive it can be to buy the rights to music, but don't say how expensive. Is it five thousand dollars, fifty thousand dollars or what? Obviously it depends on the song, but they don't give any numbers, so I felt left out of the process in this part of the reading.

I don't know if they were under contractual obligation to refrain from writing about the dollar amounts involved in deals, deals with their actors, deals with the studios, etc., but I think if they could have included a bit more of this information, it would have made the book better.

All said, I'm giving this book a strong recommendation to any interested in this field. I struggled for a moment about whether it should be a five or four star rating, I think I'd rather give it four and half stars, I wish there were some areas they'd gone into more detail. But all in all it's a really good book and belongs in the collection of all young would be film makers.
