About the Author
Michael P. Norton is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Western Australia, the Director of the Centre for Acoustics, Dynamics and Vibration at that University, and a Foundation Director of SVT - Engineering Consultants.

Denis G. Karczub is Principal Engineer at SVT - Engineering Consultants. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Western Australia, graduating with honours in 1991, and going on to obtain his PhD in 1997.

Best of the Bunch

I've collected a large number of books on noise and vibrations as I've had to learn this subject and then teach it to others, and as far as I'm concerned this is the best of the bunch. It is well organized with chapters on mechanical vibrations, sound waves, interaction of sound and vibration, measurement and control of noise, signal processing, statistical energy analysis and pipe flow noise. It starts from fundamental principles, but moves quickly to applications with an excellent balance between theory and practice. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the interaction of sound and vibration, whether they're a student or a practicing professional.

About the Author
Stephen Adly Guirgis is a member and former co-artistic director of LAByrinth Theater Company, and the 2015 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His plays have been produced on five continents and throughout the United States. They include Our Lady of 121st Street (Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle Best Play Nominations), Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train (Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award, Barrymore Award, Olivier Nomination for London’s Best New Play), In Arabia, We’d All Be Kings (2007 LA Drama Critics Best Play, Best Writing Award), The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (10 Best Plays of the Year, Time Magazine & Entertainment Weekly), and The Little Flower of East Orange (with Ellen Burstyn & Michael Shannon). All five plays were directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and were originally produced by LAByrinth. His Broadway debut, The Motherfucker with the Hat (6 Tony nominations, including Best Play), was directed by Anna D. Shapiro and marked his third consecutive world premiere co-production with The Public Theater and LAByrinth. In London, his plays have premiered at The Donmar Warehouse, The Almeida (dir: Rupert Goold), The Hampstead (Robert Delamere), and at The Arts Theater in the West End. decent play, but sub-par for Mr. Guirgis

Dialogue is good. Characters are hard to like/root for though, with the exception of Cousin Julio (who is a great Guirgis creation). The four principals are all addicts, three of whom are clean but not living good nor admirable lives (sort of the dregs of 12-step rooms and all its selfish, hurtful and worse sexual activity).

Chris Rock played Ralph D during one of the productions, and it almost feels like the part was written with him in mind when you pick up the speech patterns.

Moreover, the book emphasizes the usage of the theories and the interpretations of the mathematical formulations.  It includes a series of small examples, graphical illustrations, simple extensions and questions to think about. Also, it combines the formal models with less formal economic and organizational thinking. Last but not least it discusses some larger applications with significant practical impacts, including the design of benchmarking-based regulations of energy companies in different European countries, and the development of merger control programs for competition authorities.

Very helpful...

This is a book for any pastor who desires to minister in a small town, or thinks he may desire to minister in a small town. It's a good read for the purpose of helping the man count the cost, but also for the purpose of giving the pastor vision.

For those who are planted as pastors already in a small town, this book will inspire new vision and a different way of looking at ministry and the people in the fellowship. They are God's jewels!

I've been in pastoral ministry for over 33 years, and am committed to the value and place of the small church in the world. I'd been used to much larger church ministry, in a much larger community than my present position. This book was very helpful... not just to me, but it can also be helpful for those pastoring larger churches. I highly recommend it.

This is the kind of book that makes you say 'I wish I had read this before....' The book is very practical and very helpful for young pastors and/or pastors-to-be (semianry students). I wish I had read this before I became pastor of my first church. I bought copies to give to young pastors in our area. Small places have great value in the maturing and development of young pastors!

Well recommended for those new to portal development

In just having recently completed a development project creating portlets for the first time with a Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) compliant portal server, I hope I can provide some insight into the effectiveness of this book, since I used it to hit the ground running. Simply put, I agree with some of the other reviews here that this book is very well put together. The progression of content that the author provides from one chapter to the next is effective for those newly tackling portal development. As a consultant in such a situation, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introducing Portals and Portlets"), Chapter 2 ("The Portlet Lifecycle"), Chapter 3 ("Portlet 2.0 API: Portlet Objects and Container-runtime Options"), Chapter 6 ("Using the Portlet Tag Library"), Chapter 7 ("Getting Started with Spring Portlet MVC"), and Chapter 11 ("Communicating with Other Portlets"). The UML sequence diagrams that the author provides greatly aided the material. And believe it or not, even at almost 600-pages the author even thankfully left out the fluff that one can unfortunately often expect in other developer texts of this genre.

That said, however, potential readers need to be aware of what this book does and does not provide. Unless the reader is using Liferay, the most frequently referenced portal server in this book, they should not expect to be able to get up to speed with any specific portal server. My target portal server, for example, was IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0, and this specific portal server is only mentioned in passing a few times by the author. Usage of the XML Configuration Interface, commonly known as XMLAccess, for example, which is a requirement when using the portal server in my project environment, was not covered. Personalization rules and managing portal pages was also not covered. As with other Java specifications, much is left up to implementers with regard to what is under the covers, but as with application servers, portal servers also provide features that sit outside these specifications. While I did not purchase this text expecting that the WebSphere implementation would be covered, as a novice in this space I also was not aware how much I would be dependent on product specific features. Well recommended guide and reference for those new to portal development, especially with Spring Portlet MVC.

Best Portlet Development book period!!!

Read this book first, then download the documentation for the portlet container you plan to write on.

I have read many books on portal development, and Liferay development in particular and this book is by far the best for a serious Java developer wanting to increase their portal development skill in areas that can be applied across portal containers. Many of the books out now are little more than an introduction to the portal container or an extension to the admin Guide. This book goes where others don't. It actually has examples that the reader can follow step by step, without the many headaches the other books require. The source code is well written and displays many nice features of Spring as well as the portlet spec. This book puts the "in Action" back in the brand many of us once relied on for step by step IT instruction.

This book will make you a better developer in the Spring MVC space and get you proficient in the portal space as well. The book covers validation, security, localization, caching, Portal Admin, portlet tag library, inter portlet communication, Spring Portlet MVC, Hibernate, Spring annotations, integrating portlets with databases, personalization of portlets, Ajax portlets, iFrame portlets, wicket portlets, WSRP, building a custom portal. It is both a great learning tool for portlet development and great polisher for Spring skills as well.

If you do any portlet development or are thinking of doing any you need this book. If you are working with Liferay at all then this book is a MUST HAVE for you, even more than the admin guide.

After reading this I would like to congratulate author as he has given a book which is helpful for new as well as experienced portal/portlet developers.This book gives a complete insight of Portlet technology as well as Spring Portlet MVC framework with good code examples.The author has covered almost everything necessary for portlet development e.g. portal framework explanation, various frameworks that can be used for portlet development and advanced topics like Ajax integration with portlet technology with examples including several JavaScript libraries and Ajax frameworks like DOJO,DWR.
This book is a must have for all Portlet developers.
