About the Author

Dr. Pieter Schavemaker, Principal Consultant of E-Bridge Consulting B.V., has worked in the energy sector for 20 years. Pieter gained a varied experience working as assistant professor at the Delft University of Technology, with a large manufacturer of power system equipment (ABB), with a Transmission System Operator (Tennet TSO), and as a consultant. During recent years, Pieter was heavily involved in the international work on the boundary between system operations and the electricity market. Pieter is one of the founding fathers of the CWE Flow-based Market Coupling that is currently in operation. Pieter holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Power Systems from Delft University of Technology, is a certified PRINCE2® Practitioner, and author of the book ‘Electrical Power System Essentials’, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Lou van der Sluis obtained his M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the Delft University of Technology in 1974. He joined the KEMA High Power Laboratory in 1977 as a test engineer. In 1990 he became a part-time professor and since 1992 he has been employed as a full-time professor in Electrical Power Systems at the Delft University of Technology. Professor van der Sluis is a senior member of IEEE and past convener of CC-03 of CIGRE and CIRED to study the transient recovery voltages in medium and high voltage networks. He is has been member of CIGRE WG. A3-24 on internal arc testing and member of CIGRE WG. C4-502 to study the interaction between High-Voltage overhead lines and underground cables. He is a member of the advisory board of SC-A3 of CIGRE. Professor Van der Sluis is the author the book Transients in Power Systems and co-author  of Electrical Power System Essentials and Switching in Electrical Transmission and Distribution Systems, all published by Wiley.

About the Author
Pamela Grundy is an independent historian who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she pursues a variety of writing, teaching and museum projects. Her sports-related publications include Learning to Win: Sports, Education and Social Change in Twentieth-Century North Carolina, and Shattering the Glass: The Remarkable History of Women's Basketball (co-written with Susan Shackelford). Her work on sports has been published in the Journal of American History, the International Journal of the History of Sport and Southern Cultures, and has received awards from the American Historical Association, the North American Society for Sport History the History of Education Society and the Oral History Association.
Benjamin G. Rader is James L. Sellers Professor of History, Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has authored eight books, including Baseball: A History of American Game, 3rd. ed. (2008) and has had articles appear in the Journal of American History, American Quarterly, the Journal of Sport History, and the Journal of Popular Culture. Presently, he is completing a book tentatively entitled Down in the Hollows: A Tale of Neighborhood and Family in the Missouri Ozarks. Married with one adult child and three grandchildren, he continues to be an avid tennis player.

Good book, but there are a few errors in it

I'm a pretty big fan of SpongeBob, so when I heard about this book I was very excited. If there's one thing I love more than SpongeBob, it's learning about the behind the scenes action that goes on when they produce the show and this book does a great job covering it. From concept art and model sheets, from storyboards to even an exposure sheet, this book has a wealth of information that is bound to excite the SpongeBob SquarePants enthusiast.

The book's chapters are broken up into sections, 3 of which are devoted to the creation of SpongeBob (at various points in the book), the rest being devoted to the characters (and the voice talent behind them!). There are a boatload of tidbits about the odds and ends of the show's origin, including fun facts like SpongeBob originally wearing his Krusty Krab hat all the time, not just at work. It also explains how Stephen Hillenberg left his original position on the show after the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and Paul Tibbit took his place.

As for the chapters on characters, each of those is an in depth look at the story behind the main SpongeBob characters and their voice actors. Throughout each of these chapters you will find concept artwork and storyboard images (in addition to general show images, of course) pertaining to the character. For example, Sandy's chapter includes a few storyboard pages from her first appearance in the episode "Tea at the Treedome." Also included in these chapters are lists of the character's best moments (some of which I disagree with, but hey, that's why we have opinions!), a sampling of quotes from the character (which are mostly general ones and catchphrases, though there are some good ones in there), a handful of character props which I'll talk about in just a moment, and even the voice actors' reflections on their experience voicing the characters.

One thing I really like about this book is Jerry Beck's decision to include character based props in the book. You can tell that a lot of effort was put into some of them too! Some of these include Squidward's cashier name tag from work, SpongeBob's Jellyfishing Club membership card, a snail care guide, and (gasp!) the Krabby Patty Secret Formula! Better not let Plankton read this book! The inclusion of these is a great touch, and it definitely helped me dive deep into the world of Bikini Bottom like the title says.

Unfortunately the book is not without its flaws. As much as I like the book I couldn't help but notice several errors in it, being the SpongeBob fan I am. I was a little surprised personally because Jerry Beck's books are usually pretty error-free, but there's no denying the errors that are in the book, some of which are:

- Dr. Gill Gilliam's profile uses a picture of a totally different doctor
- A storyboard page that is clearly from "I Was a Teenage Gary" is mislabeled as being from "Squeaky Boots"
- In Sandy's chapter, a picture of her Scottish cousin from "Stanley S. SquarePants" is mislabeled as being Sandy herself.

While these errors (which are mostly minor captioning errors) are a little distracting for big fans like me, they shouldn't be a huge distraction to the average reader. What matters isn't the errors, but the overall experience of learning about the history behind the phenomenon known as SpongeBob SquarePants. Kids will enjoy reading this and seeing familiar images from the show, and parents and older fans like myself can find some enjoyment in it too! It's not just a book for kids, it's a book for all fans of the little square dude. In that respect, I'll forgive Beck's errors and congratulate him on the wonderful book he's written.

This is the first “serious” book on Spongebob

To my knowledge, this is the first “serious” book on Spongebob, in the sense that the cartoon is being treated as a considerable work of modern culture. Hopefully it won’t be the last.

For gift giving, the timing couldn’t be better—a high-end coffee table treatment of the world’s most popular cartoon sponge. The book is nestled cleverly in a semi-transparent slipcase and really lights up a room. Visually, the book is a treasure for Spongebob fans, especially the older ones (a small child would tear out the little storyboards; a Little Golden Book would do just fine).

With the book’s Hendrix-like moniker, The Spongbob Squarepants Experience, rather than “Happy Birthday” or “15 Years,” the book has to cut a wide swath beyond congratulation and commemoration. It does do that and much more.

Like an “Art Of” book, it’s loaded with spectacular color reproductions and vibrant sketches. Like a “Treasury” book it has lots of stuff to open, unfold and otherwise marvel upon. Among the tchotchkes are a comic book, storyboards and gag sketches. When you see the work and artistry behind Spongebob Squarebob as a massive body of work, it transcends its well-earned “funny cartoon” reputation and is seen as a huge effort by eminently talented animators, background painters, layout people and voice artists (who all get a profile as each character is discussed).

It’s rare today to find an all-around cartoon property like Spongebob, who isn’t as seen largely as a sitcom, “adult” cartoon or kid’s show, that is standing the test of time. Spongebob and his fellow characters have the flexibility, potential and staying power of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. It’s about time it is recognized in this way

Jerry Beck’s text acknowledges the history and impact of Spongebob and his friends on the world over the last fifteen years. It is not simply “decoration” in a pretty book, but of course Jerry’s copy could never be that, even in its most abbreviated form (I love that little Flintstones book). To keep things interesting, the pages have sidebars and running categories like and “favorite lines” and whimsical “little known facts.”

Like Oliver Twist, I want some more. Do another one, Jerry.

You must buy it if you are a Sponge Bob fan. Includes a lot of information about the series, the characters and the creator. The design of the book is awesome. You discover exclusive pictures, by flipping or sliding pieces, as you move along in the book.
