For more than 30 years, John Tillman Lyle (1934-1998) was one of the leading thinkers in ecological design. Design for Human Ecosystems, originally published in 1985, is his classic text that explores methods of designing landscapes that function in the sustainable ways of natural ecosystems.

The book provides a framework for thinking about and understanding ecological design, along with a wealth of real-world examples that bring to life Lyle's key ideas. Lyle traces the historical growth of design approaches involving natural processes and presents an introduction to the principles, methods, and techniques that can be used to shape landscape, land use, and natural resources in an ecologically sensitive and sustainable manner.

This new edition features a foreword by Joan Woodward, a noted landscape architecture professor and colleague of Lyle, that places the book in the context of current ecological design thinking and discusses Lyle's contributions to the field. Principles and practice of ecosystem design

After reading Design for Human Ecosystems, I wished I could have attended one of Professor Lyle's lectures. Lyle is one of the pioneers of the regenerative design approach which advocates forms of human development that restore and renew landscapes. This book presents principles, methods, and examples of ecosystem design.

Major topics discussed in this book are scale dynamics, ecological diversity, and the design of productive landscapes. The book is also a user's manual that bridges principles to practice through the presentation of procedures, techniques, and case studies.

I knew little about regenerative design and was daunted by the complexity of the subject. However Lyle's years of didactic experience shine through in this book which is well structured and written impeccably. Scientific and theoretical concepts are presented clearly and allowed me to learn more about biology, landscape architecture, and environmental planning. This is not a dry, boring book. Lyle's style is at times humorous and philosophical. The author presents his ideas in an optimistic way giving mankind a prominent role in mending our relationship with nature. Lyle also comes across as a pragmatic environmentalist. He acknowledges human needs and desires and the role played by money, politics, and time. The case studies illustrate well this pragmatism and show the ecosystem design approach adapted to a variety of situations -rural and urban; economically privileged and disadvantaged. This is an essential read for anyone interested in how to reconcile nature and human development in a realistic way.

Another classic for future generations

John Lyle continues his seminal work presented in "Regenerative Design for Sustainable Development". Any one interested in designing deep structures of urban spaces into sustainable environments would benefit greatly from reading this book. This book also covers rural development as well. Propagation of water flows for maximum beneficial inter-relationships is one particula r topic of interest for me.
I highly recommend this book!

Very well written book and gives lots of guidance and input to an aspiring Project Control Manager, as well as provides a comprehensive check list for a PCM currently working on EPC Projects.This book contains a variety of information, methods and procedures for new PCM to understand the significance and importance of his role on a project and how he/she should interface with the Project Manager. A PCM is the eye and the ear of the Project Manager, conveys critical information about the Project to PM on a timely manner, so that decision could be made to avert any cost increase or delay. Quick & Dirty: An enjoyable read on a sunny afternoon.

Opening Sentence: Kael paced the length of his private sleeping chamber, avoiding the plush emerald carpet and keeping to the uncovered stone floor at the edge of the room.

The Review:

In a world where vampires are known to some humans and almost worshipped by them even, live the seven vampire kings, each holding rule over their portion of the Earth. Surrounding each is a group of humans known as the Electorate, ones who have traded their services in deception and cover, along with their virgin daughters, in exchange for protection from death and disease, and those who would do them harm.

In the wilds of Ireland lives such a king, Kael the Fair, Warrior King of the Vampires, Chieftain of Clan MacQuillan. Every three months, to maintain his health and immortality, he must feed, But the donor, must be either his mate, or a mortal virgin, preferably in her twentieth year. It is this need that Kael despises the most. Ever since he lost his mate and child in childbirth, the Proffering is an unwanted necessity, and an unwelcome risk. You see, with the partaking of a human woman's blood is the chance that he will find his destined mate, and he is unwilling to risk another loved one, not when the war with their enemies is still at hand. So, he takes the blood of the Proffered by knife and only takes their virginity because he cannot fight the power inside him.

But, this time, something is different. Because this time, the Proffered really is destined to be his mate.

Shayla has been training for this moment for seven long years, has been dreaming of the day she could join the vampires and their helpers, and aid in the war against those who murdered her sister. When she is finally chosen to be the Proffered on her 20th birthday, she is ready and all too willing. But things do not progress as she has been told, and she is sent home untouched. She sees herself as a failure to her family and race, but all is not lost. Upon returning to her home, she finds that Kael has requested her return to his castle. She prepares to return, to perform her duty, but all is still not as she was told.

You see, despite his other plans, The King wishes to keep this one as his mate, for apparently it has been destined, and he cannot leave her or her magical mismatched eyes alone. What follows is a love story, true to good old Harlequin form, and a mating completed by one of the most amazing rituals I've read about. It's so strangely beautiful.

In the Service of the King is a wonderful light read, and I hope that I will most certainly enjoy the next installment, Seduced by the Vampire King, which comes out in June 2012.

A Fantastic Short Story

When I read the synopsis of the book, I was a little skeptical of how Shayla is eager to give Kael, Warrior King of the Vampires anything to please him. I thought the story was going to be farfetched. Why would a woman be willing to give this Vampire King, someone she never met, anything he wishes, including her virginity? But damn! Laura Kaye blew me away with this wonderful story!!

Kael can only have the blood of a human virgin or his mate. He lost his mate 300 years ago to the Soul Eaters and he is determined to never take a mate again. Every few months he goes through the Night of the Proffering in which the Proffered (a human female virgin who has trained many years for this one night with the King) is brought to him so he can feed. Kael dreads this night but knows he must feed, because his warriors will not feed until he does. Kael and his warriors need their strength in order to fight against the Soul Eaters, so even though he hates it, Kael will feed from the Proffered. This time he finds the Shayla waiting for him and Kael's life will be forever changed.

Shayla (also known as the Proffered) has dedicated her life to the cause of defeating the Soul Eaters. Soul Eaters are evil vampires that drain the blood from humans and consume their souls by drinking through the last stutters of their heart. Then they rip out the heart and eat it. Kayla's sister was brutally raped and murdered by Soul Eaters, and since that day, Kayla has decided she would do whatever she could to aid Kael and the Vampire Warriors in their fight against the Soul Eaters. Since Shayla knows she could never fight and kill them, she decides to become a Proffered and aid the Warrior King of the Vampires in any other way she can.

I LOVED this story. Once I started it, I could not stop reading it until I was finished. Even though it was a short story, I felt that it was not rushed. I loved the chemistry between Kael and Shayla. I also loved Liam, Kael's right hand warrior and the only person close to Kael. I hope that he will get a story of his own. My only complaint is that I wish this was not a short story because I would have loved to read a full length novel of Kael and Shayla.

I give "In The Service Of The King" 5 out of 5 stars.

In the Service of the King...Gratifying Short Story!

This was a lovely paranormal romance novella. The tenderness displayed by the main characters, Kael and Shayla, was so passionate. Kael is the fair warrior king of the vampires and Shayla is the chosen blood donor for the vampire king. Grade 5-7–Continuing the story begun in Doctor Illuminatus (Little, Brown, 2004), this blend of fantasy and horror has little to offer except a fast-paced plot, and even that is full of loose ends. Having vanquished the corrupt alchemist de Loudéac, English twins Pip and Tim think the biggest challenge facing them now is the start of seventh grade at their new private school. By the end of the first day, however, they've met a teacher and a student who seem more, or perhaps less, than human. Their friend Sebastian, who has hibernated magically for most of the past 600 years, recognizes the teacher as another wicked alchemist and the student as a beastlike wodwo. He and the siblings set out to foil the evildoers' plan, which includes controlling people by stealing their souls. Many important details remain unexplained: Sebastian's magical powers, de Loudéac's return from the dead, and the origin of the frightening visions–or are they real?–that pursue the twins as they track down the wodwo and the alchemist. Gr. 5-8. Junior high has begun for new kids Pip and Tim, but it offers little escape from the terrors of Doctor Illuminatus (2004), the first book in Booth's The Alchemist's Son series. It seems their homeroom teacher is a reincarnated fifteenth-century mage specializing in mind control. Compounding that bad luck is the task of training Sebastian, a medieval good guy only recently awakened from a state of suspended animation, to pose as a student so he can keep an eye on things. The trio thwarts a wildly improbable plot to adapt England's nuclear energy infrastructure as a delivery system for evil. Leavening the dire goings-on are incidents of cultural disconnect between the twins and their courtly, humorless companion, inserted with such an air of dogged effort that few readers will find that they fulfill their intended function. Offer this to those who enjoyed the first book; they likely won't mind the focus on action over plausibility. Martin Booth's teenage alchemist returns in "Soul Stealer: The Alchemist's Son Part II," a somewhat shaky but somewhat stronger fantasy thriller. It's a more entertaining, creepy adventure, though the "alchemist's son" of the title is the book's biggest weakness.

Tim and Pip are about to start at their new school, which would seem normal if Sebastian had not given her an "evil detector" pendant. The two of them soon discover that not all is well at their school: One of the teachers, Yoland, is an evil magician who helped kill his father, and the local bully Guy Scrotton is an undead wodewose ("wild man").

So Pip and Guy take their riskiest step yet: Enrolling Sebastian in a modern high school. The three teenagers begin searching for Yoland's master plan, while trying to keep the savage Scrotton from ripping them to shreds. Then they learn that his plot may have something to do with their upcoming field trip... to a nuclear plant.

"Soul Stealer" has something of the same general plot as "Doctor Illuminatus" -- teen heroes, cameo by Satan, megalomaniacal sorcerers, beast-men, sheep with fangs, computer hacking, and some creepy medieval alchemy. It wouldn't take much more than that to make a really entertaining fantasy thriller.

And to some degree, the book is more engaging than its predecessor. It has a strong unifying plot, more descriptive prose and fewer brand names. Booth has obviously gotten a handle on his storytelling, now that he has introduced the main characters. What's more, he has some truly chilling villains, especially the savage wodewose Scrotton.

Sebastian the teenage alchemist is the biggest problem of the book. He comes across as rigid and humourless, useful mainly for historical background. Putting him in a typical school setting could have given the book some much-needed humour, and shown Sebastian in a more human light, but it never happens. Worse, Booth uses Sebastian to spout bits of historical minutiae that aren't really relevant.

The "alchemist's son" is a major weakness, but the "Soul Stealer" is a stronger second installment in Martin Booth's series. Flawed, but worth reading.

A Good Read

Soul Stealer, the sequel to Alchemist's Son is a wonderful book. It brings that touch of fantasy in without going over the board and tipping it into a different world. The setting is in England and although you occassionally forget that, the author is very good at reminding you. I would rate it five stars but for one thing. These books were obviously supposed to be part of series, unfortunately the author died the year after publishing Soul Stealer. So while any good book leaves you wanting more, this one leaves you wanting just a bit too much more.

A Book That Will Provoke You and Make You Think

As an author and PhD student I take seriously the area of disability studies. This thought provoking book is an excellent way to consider those whom society deems different and the limitations we place which blocks an individual more than any physical disability could. I found the writing exemplary and the content utterly compelling.
I would recommend this book not only to educators but to authors and writers who wish to add depth to their characterizations and develop an understanding of disability culture.
