Very handy

I wish I had this book when I started my doctoral program! The author has done a great job compiling different theories as well as the major constructs and references. He doesn't go into too much detail about any given theory, but gives just enough information to get the general idea and then points you in the right direction to get more information if you want it. Very handy to have around my office.

About the Author
IAN APPLETON PhD, DARCH, DipCD, RIBA, FRIAS, RIAS is an architect and partner in the Edinburgh-based firm of the Appleton Partnership. He was architect for a variety of theatres and other building types. He has had experience of demand studies, feasibility and other aspects of the design and development of building for the performing arts, as well as the wider involvement in urban, building and interior designs. He is also involved in teaching, research and writing on architecture.

Solid guide to designing performing arts facilities

This is a very good guide to designing performing arts facilities. The text is well organized, and bulleted lists, section headings and short chapters make the information easy to digest, despite the slightly dense writing style.

Part 1 describes different types of performances, clients and buildings. It includes approximately 30 pages showing real buildings as examples of the many different building types; each example is illustrated with photographs and plans. Part 2 describes the design process, focusing on the initial stages of working with the client(s) and developing a concept.

Part 3 examines specific aspects of the design, including the size and shape of the stage, acoustics, row spacing, sight lines, backstage areas, lobbies and box offices, and more. A special chapter addresses the adaption and renovation of existing buildings. Each detail is illustrated with clear diagrams.

Recommended for architecture and interior design collections.

The book contains a numerous amount of information for programming a theater. While it is not an exhaustive list it is good for getting a project started! I have used it on the initial phases of my thesis. No complaints here!

Appleton's book is an altogether excellent "graphic standard" for the design of all aspects of a building devoted to the performing arts -- from auditoriums to lobbies and beyond. As an architectural thesis student designing a theater, the book became an invaluable resource to me.

Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Thyroid fine needle aspiration is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule. Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the U.S.

The terminology described in this book is an important advance in the field of cytopathology. It represents the results of the multidisciplinary National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of The Science Conference, held in Bethesda, MD in October, 2007.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It will serve as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Where are the color pictures?

In a digital age is really a shame that this book's pictures are black & white. I thought that this thing was a feature from the past, when all books where b&W. They didn't take in consideration the i-pad and pc readers.

Pictures in black and white in a pathology book?! This is awful! I want my money back! Even the cover is black and white. How do you expect me to understand cytology with no colors at all?

buy the soft cover, not the kindle

from the reviews, it seems that the kindle edition is all still in black and white. i suggest buying the real book. the colors are crucial, and the minute detail are well seen on the actual book. I recommend this book for all students of pathology. It is written in the style of the first Bethesda book on cervical cytology.

Toni Bickart, senior associate and editor in chief at Teaching Strategies, is the co-author of Preschool for Parents, What Every Parent Needs to Know about 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grades, Building the Primary Classroom, Reading Right from the Start, and a contributing author of The Creative Curriculum for Preschool. In addition to her own classroom teaching experience, she has worked as a teacher mentor in the D.C. Public Schools and presents workshops for teachers and parents around the country. She is an "Early Education Expert" for ParentSoup, a leading Internet site for parents. In addition to her educational background, Ms. Bickart holds a master's degree in social work from Columbia University.

Judy Jablon is an experienced classroom teacher, author, and staff development specialist. She spent 12 years in the classroom teaching grades one through four, and holds a master's degree in early childhood education from the Bank Street College of Education. Ms. Jablon is a nationally recognized expert on early childhood assessment. She has worked on major school reform projects with the South Carolina Department of Education and the Maryland Department of Education. Diane Trister Dodge, founder and president of Teaching Strategies, Inc., is the author of numerous books, articles, and training materials on early childhood education. She is the lead author on all of Teaching Strategies books, including the popular The Creative Curriculum®...series.
After earning a Master's degree from Bank Street College of Education, Diane earned 30 years of experience working with teachers and administrators first as a kindergarten teacher, and then as the education coordinator for a Head Start program in rural Mississippi. Diane is a renowned speaker and trainer, and a former member of the Governing Board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). She currently serves on the Board of the Center for the Child Care Work Force and other local Washington, DC organizations.

Most Excellent Resource

This "must have" resource is a wonderful summary of everything that (hopefully) you learned in undergraduate school. Chapters include all areas of the curriculum. I recommend this book for ALL preservice teachers as well as veterans who want to do some individual professional development.

Additionally, Building the Primary Classroom is a "must have" for teachers who are pursuing National Board Certification.
