DEEPENING FICTION assumes the reader has already studied an introductory text on the fiction-writing craft such as Mark Baechtel's Shaping the Story or Janet Burroway's Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft. (I recently posted my reviews of the Bachtael and the Burroway books on amazon.)

Although DEEPENING FICTION is designed primarily as a textbook for advanced courses, I found it entirely accessible for self-teaching. It could very well serve as the focus book of a study group as it poses intelligently worded discussion questions on each of the twenty-two stories in its anthology section. Among these stories, sixteen are by contemporary writers.

In the preface, the authors observe: "More experienced writers are ready to understand just how much writing is revision, how much we develop the shape and meaning of the story over multiple drafts. Our goal is to help writers connect craft to the particular work they are wrestling with. ... The long middle stretch of the writing apprenticeship--between initial learning of the basic concepts and the production of meaningful, memorable works free of inconsistencies and clichés--can be a hard one. ... It's one thing to learn the difference between scene and summary and quite another to figure out what parts of a particular story to render as scene, what as summary, and how these choices influence the story's meaning."

Scene, summary, flashbacks, backstory, and transitions are the topics constituting chapter 5, which presents illuminating story analyses of Lan Samantha Chang's "The Eve of the Spirit Festival" and Yasunari Kawabata's "The Rooster and the Dancing Girl."

Chapter 1 reviews issues in complexifying characters, with illustrations from Tobias Wolff's "Powder" and ZZ Packer's "Drinking Coffee Elsewhere."

Chapters 2 and 3 take on complexifying point of view beyond first, second, third, with story analyses of Margot Livesey's "The Niece," Jorge Luis Borges's "Inferno, I, 32," and Anton Chekov's "Gooseberries." As an example of stories that require first-person narrators, Alice Munro's "The Turkey Season" is analyzed. "Orientation," by Daniel Orozco, a frequently anthologized story to exemplify second-person point of view (as done in Burroway's textbook) is persuasively analyzed instead as a monologue. Second-person narration is illustrated by Adam Johnson's "Trauma Plate." The authors note that this is the only short story "we know of, in fact, uses first, second, and third person." Johnson contributes several substantial paragraphs explaining his point-of-view choices in revising successive drafts of the story.

Chapter 4 discusses alternative plot structures by analyzing John L. Heureux's "Father," Melissa Pritchard's "Photograph of Luisa," and Julio Cortazar's "Graffiti."

Other chapters include discussions of style and dialogue by analyses of Charles Baxter's "The Cures for Love" and Grace Paley's "A Conversation With My Father."

The chapter on revision discusses the beginnings and endings of three stories each, all included in the anthology. It concludes with a summary "Common Pitfalls in Beginning ad Endings." For detailed discussion of revision, I recommend David Kaplan's "REVISION: A Creative Approach to Writing and Rewriting Fiction," which includes three of the author's own stories in several stages of redrafting.

This book teaches the fiction-craft skills of an MFA-level course, delivering the promise of its subtitle: A Practical Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Writers.

A useful addition to the bookshelf.

As anyone who purchases books on writing craft knows, reviews are not always reliable or accurate, and very few titles deliver practical advice one can apply to a manuscript in development. The authors I edit often ask me for a list of books worth purchasing. Deepening Fiction is one I suggest for writers who have already advanced their craft beyond basics. While it is pitched at the student in a learning environment, it is both accessible and useful for writers in less rarefied writing circumstances, including published authors who want to re-examine certain areas of their craft.

There are more helpful, practical guides for new writers: if you can only buy one book on how to write fiction, buy the Stephen Koch classic Writer's Workshop. However, if you are not a novice, have some money to spend, and already own the must-have titles, Deepening Fiction is worth considering.

This volume, has strengths and weaknesses. Among its stronger material, and the reason I am reviewing it, are the useful chapters on Point of View. A fairly basic discussion of the common Third Person narratives is provided, with a useful passage on creating subtle shifts. However, the author offers an in-depth examination of the First and Second Person, which is among the best and most thorough I have read. Very few works on craft discuss, for example, the use of Second Person as Disguised First Person. A useful set of POV exercises are also included and I appreciated the succinct content the author provides in charts. If you only purchase this work for the content on POV, it is worth buying.

However, there are other useful chapters, also. The material on Plot & Structure, and Narrative Drive is solid, if not especially unique. (The exercises in revision are helpful). An excellent passage on Timeline is another of this guide's virtues. Writers frequently find themselves bogged down in the unhappy mire of timeline issues and too often come up with only the most pedestrian, linear solutions to their woes. Deepening Fiction offers useful insights and could help you explore more creative options.

Both Character and Style receive a somewhat perfunctory, if adequate, treatment - the type of thing one would expect to find in a classroom. Perhaps the authors, Stone and Nyron, were mindful of the relative abundance of works that explore these areas of fiction craft. So, if you are seeking a title with special strength in the examination of Character, take a pass on this one.

I was especially interested to see how the authors deal with the topic of Revision; few titles address this critical area of manuscript development with any degree of depth or pragmatism. In Deepening Fiction a chapter on the subject is focused on story analysis, attempting to assist the writer in how to receive criticism, objectively examine story elements and re-enter the story in the context of revision. Throughout the other chapters additional revision-focused passages are provided in relation to each topic - setting, character etc. If you are working in literary fiction, and dealing in particular with the short story, this approach to revision may be valuable and relevant. If not, or if you are working in the commercial genres, you may find the authors' approach a tad unclear and the methodologies less suitable for you.

An anthology of stories is included in this volume, taking up quite a chunk of the page count - with the student in mind. The selection is a good one for students. Working authors may also find some of these, and the related exercises, interesting if nothing else. Many of you will probably bypass this content entirely, as classroom in its orientation.

Deepening Fiction is a useful addition to a collection of works on writing craft. There are no silver bullets between its covers, but the authors do a commendable job of writing a guide that will not only serve its target audience - students of writing - but has something to offer fiction authors out in the real world.

Excellent Book, truly

Hi,

I have read at least twenty books on the craft of writing. (Someday, I will be a world-famous novelist.)

Anyway, this book is truly wonderful, I would not say that if I did not mean it. For one, it features something I have wanted to see for years and years: the first draft of a work, then revisions, more revisions, and its final form.

Invaluable, in that it shows the work methods, the honing, the forming, and of course the published version.

And a good section on POV, laying out the general rules of each, their advantages and difficulties, etc.

A lot of interesting short stories, along with analyses of each.

This book is one of three that I really feel are worth the time to read and re-read.

(The other two? Elements of Style, of course. And Stephen King's, 'On Writing'.

If your goal is to be a published writer of fiction, buy this book. So many books on how to write fiction are a waste of time and a horrible reason to turn a tree into paper, this one is worth it.

Breathtaking photographs - lots of interesting facts

I bought this book for my son, who is an Aerospace Engineering graduate and a big Tim Peake fan. I have the hard cover copy of the book and the printing on the cover is excellent and vibrant. The book measures 23,5cm x 23.5cm x 2cm.

This is astronaut Tim Peake's first book. The book is full of beautiful photographs in full colour and the introduction 4 pages long. From the ISS he can see over 1000 km in any direction and his explanation of passing over the French Alps he could see a view stretching from Greece to the UK with just a turn of the head makes you realise just how amazing his journey must have been. He references the camera (Nikon D4) that he used and goes into detail about that.

The back of the book has an entire page with reference to each location of the photograph. This book is ideal for anyone who loves space and especially great to show children and use this book in schools.

The ISS is packed with cutting edge technology including wi-fi and the internet connection to Earth via a satellite (it was very slow).

The book outlines his mission with a sketch covering two pages in the book, from 15 December 2015 (launch day) right through to the 18th June 2016 when he eventually gets back home.

The photographs are breathtaking and the text for each page is roughly 4 lines with many pages referencing many interesting facts about the locations. For example, Emi Koussi volcano which is at the top of one of the pictures, the highest mountain in the Sahara, and the 345 million year old Aorounga impact crater in Chad (bottom of the picture). There is a short description of the picture/photograph and then a small picture showing the location on a map.

I am so happy I bought it and hope my son is going to love it too.

Dealing with Loss

This book could have been called Dealing with Loss, as this is really what it’s about. Hasan describes loss as anything from losing a partner or friend, to losing a job or promotion, and then breaks it down further into the small losses that happen to us all on a daily basis. Hasan has an entertaining style, and one of the features I liked most was her honesty and revelations about how she dealt with loss in her own life. Refreshingly, I never felt preached to, nor was there any sense of condescension which made it possible for me to engage with the text and the message she was delivering. There were exercises at the end of each section that gave me insight into how to deal with some of these issues in a practical way, which I found useful. I would recommend this book for anyone currently dealing with loss to help them gain insight into what is going on in their life and how to process it.

This is a great book for any transition that you go through whether it's a catastropic event or life's inevitable transitions, such as, aging. I have hilighted a lot of widsom in this book. Servet Hasan writes directly from the heart in a down to earth way that is easy to follow.

Crystal clear snapshot of 1950

This is a deep historical novel, autobiographical. A crystal clear snapshot of Hong Kong and China in 1949-50 (and the Korean War). The author is a person of great character, restraint, emotion and powers of observation. The copy I received was printed in 1950 or 1952, contains a dated introduction by the "Commissioner-General for the United Kingdom in South-East Asia"! This was apparently Han's second book. One can read about the life of this distinguished author on the net and see here on Amazon the many books she subsequently wrote. Apparently she is in her 90s now and lives in Europe. Han Suyin is a great treasure of our world. This book was a fine companion to Philip Snow's The Fall of Hong Kong, which I read a few months ago.

Timeless

This is a book from a different age when it was possible to develop a theme more slowly but it remains a beautifully constructed many-layered novel. On the surface it is a love story but there is a fascinating historical perspective that is of particular interest as China's importance grows. Beneath those aspects is the insight into class and race prejudice that is as relevant today as it was in Hong Kong in the fifties. The book is strongly autobiographical yet remains a novel. Any reader would identify with or recognise characters from their own world. I can recommend this book to readers with the time to enjoy beautiful descriptive writing and a gentle yet thoroughly absorbing story of great humanity.

A Practical Guide to Using the WBS

This is a readable book about a difficult subject, the creation and, especially, the use of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), for planning and managing a project. It is written for professional project managers but is approachable by any non-professional with a personal or work-related project. The authors are among the world's experts on the WBS since they led the Project Management Institute (PMI) team that developed the official Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures - Second Edition. The book serves as a user's manual that shows how the official Standard can be applied in every day practice. The key word for this book is practicality.

The WBS is the basis for all project management tools and procedures. Accordingly the book provides insights into the whole range of project management practice. It initially provides an overview of what a WBS is, how to recognize whether a specific WBS is appropriate for any given project, and how to create a WBS using ground-up planning, templates, or standards. It then provides in-depth explanations of the practical use of the WBS in the major project management knowledge areas of scope, time, cost, quality, communication and risk management.

I particularly like chapters 3 and 4 on initiating a project by using the WBS to define the project scope. This discussion really brings together the integrated use of all of the scope tools, e.g., Project Charter, Scope Statement, Statements of Work (SOW), WBS Dictionary, Scope Baseline, Acceptance Criteria) in a way that, I suspect, practitioners rarely appreciate. A side effect of this discussion is to clarify how each of the other deliverables is used and individually adds value to the project management process.

The authors introduce a valuable new concept, the "Scope Relationship Diagram" which is both a way for thinking about dependencies in the WBS as well as a very useful technique for communicating dependencies across WBS hierarchy levels in an intuitive visual way. It should be especially useful in the context of horizon planning where future tasks are not yet defined in the same detail as early tasks. Very nice!

The informal writing style makes the subject matter much more understandable than does the more formal and proscriptive style that is usually used to describe the WBS. The authors often use the form of a dialog with the reader: "This is Eric speaking...This is Rob...". This style defuses some of the authoritarian atmosphere surrounding WBS discussions and makes it a more appealing tool. The concepts presented in each chapter are illustrated by repeated use of a house metaphor as a practical example of applying the concepts presented to the planning and execution of a hypothetical new home construction project. Each chapter provides references and review questions with answers and the appendix provides examples of key deliverables.

I strongly recommend the book.

Most experienced project manager's practitioners know the WBS importance. This is the result of a good planning. This book teaches to the reader how to construct a high-quality WBS. Authors include their own experience during several years working in Project Management. The book is aligned to PMBOK -Project Management Body of Knowledge Third Edition.

There are several examples (whit all the information) of WBS developed by: Process Group, Knowledge Area, and an interesting Knowledge Area Lite. Certainly, I enjoy reading; also, I learn many new elements than have improved my understanding.
