Important book for coastal - and maritime engineers

Safety and reliability engineers responsible for the design of maritime structures can find in Goda's book all necessary background information for the probabilistic description of loads on those structures. No other book currently exists which gives such a complete overview of all methods to describe random sea waves, with particular attention to the extreme waves. This second edition (2000) contains a number of extensions w.r.t. the first edition (1985) and some sections have been rewritten. The reviewer especially enjoyed studying Goda's outline on correlation models between successive wave heights, marginal probability density functions of wave periods, and joint distributions of wave heights and periods of waves with narrow-band spectra.

Beautiful stuff!

I'm making a quick edit on this review 13 years later. Photographs are very captivating. They are all from Brit pop magazines like The Face and BIG. Back in the day it was totally worth it to get the book and make it as part of your art collection. However some of the photographs are very a la mode and lack creativity or are obviously over photoshopped. There are a few novel compositions and themes though. I flip through it now and I guess I don't feel as excited as I did when I bought it in 2001, not because I already know what's in it, but nothing in it is particularly mind blowing considering how much graphics design and technology has progressed today.

Blurring the Lines Between Photography and Digital Manipulation

In "The Impossible Image," Mark Sanders explores the ways technology is changing fashion photography. He questions whether we should even consider digitally manipulated photographs to be photography. Even though the subject was shot with a camera, computer manipulation plays a large, if not a larger role, than the camera.
Take for example, Vincent Peters' images of the super model, Gisele. Placed in a glass box in the center of the frame, pedestrians stare at her through the glass. The catch is that the pedestrians were not present at the time of the photograph, but manipulated in a completely believable fashion into the photograph. On the other spectrum, Phil Poynter's "I Didn't Recognize You With Your Clothes On" portfolio is obviously manipulated. Relying on sexual connotation, the photographs depict clothing as if it were on a human, but in an empty frame. The body has been completely erased from the photograph leaving only an impression of reality.
What makes this book so fascinating is Sanders' understanding of the history of photography. For Sanders, photography has always been thought of as a `factual' visual system. We believe it to be a process that "never lies" because, the subject was physically in the same space as the camera at the time it was photographed. What Sanders examines is a collection of digitally manipulated images in different stages of this understanding. In the beginning of the book, he presents images that could easily be mistaken for what was actually in front of the camera at the time it was shot. Towards the end of book, there are more obviously computer manipulated images that are instantly recognizable as such to the viewer. Within this progression, our understanding of manipulation changes and the lines between photography and digital manipulation blur into questions about the role of photography in modern society.

Best Shiatsu Book Buy

I was taught Shiatsu for 2 months while in massage school. I bought this book several months after graduating from school. Shiatsu was a class I didn't fully understand. Now I have a better understanding of this art and will continue to learn more about it with this book. If you are learning Shiatsu in school buy this book also to learn from alone with the book(s) given to you by the school, It will help.

About the Author
Joachim Piprek received his Ph.D. in solid state physics from Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. For more than 15 years, he has been conducting research on simulation, design, and analysis of optoelectronic devices, both in industry and academia. Dr. Piprek has authored more than 100 journal and conference publications and he has taught graduate courses at universities in Germany, Sweden, and in the United States. Currently, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Dr. Piprek chairs the annnual international conference 'Numerical Simulation of Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices' (NUSOD). He also serves as guest editor for leading technical journals and gives short courses on optoelectronic device simulation at universities and companies worldwide.

Concise and to the point

Including over 180 table and figures, the book is practical and it is easy to use both for studying and handbook. Almost on every page, or every other page, there¡¯s a table or a figure, companied by coherent descriptions, so one can easily understand what is going on. The tables seem to be a compilation of material parameters and constants, useful and convenient for any optoelectronic device modeling, some of which are hard to find on other books. Many simulation results are given along with real device measurements from latest device research projects. If you're using or going to use high-end software for optoelectronic device design and analysis, this is the book for you.

This book was required for my Optoelectronic devices class...sort of. There are no problems in the book and there are no examples. I looked through the book and read some of it and then decided to return it because I really don't think it's worth $90. The book is only 280 pages, and if you look through the table of contents you notice that half of those pages are review of things like quantum mechanics basics, density of states in semiconductors, and other semiconductor basics. In the first few pages of the book he describes conduction band electrons and holes, and refers to holes as actual charges, making no reference at all to the fact that they are just empty bonds. That alone is not much to go on to judge a book, but I was immediately turned off by this. If you're learning these review things for the first time, you don't want to learn them from a 5 page handwaving review. And if you already know these basics, you don't want half the book to be about them, leaving only about 130 pages for actual new Optoelectronic Devices material. I am in the class now at Virginia Tech, but I refuse to buy this book. I'm looking for another book on the topic.

Big tittle for narrow scientific field covered

I got fooled by the big title of this book, which is confusing, inaccurate at least. It should rather be called Modern optoelectronic devices. I would expect more textbook-style contents and treatment. Unfortunately, it's more about authors selected research and experience with few modern devices, mostly lasers, and corresponding basic theory.
It treats in detail some special optoelectronic devices like lasers or modulators. No treatment of photodiodes at all, the only candidate for photodection is an amplified GaAs photodetector. I find it misleading regarding the title of this book!
Stay away from this book of you are looking for a textbook or a reference text. If you are fan of state-of-the art research, it probably for you.
