Double Exposures: The Practice of Cultural Analysis, by Mieke Bal

A feminist literary theorist, specialist in Rembrandt, and a scholar with a knack for reading Old Testament stories, Mieke Bal weaves a tapestry of signs and meanings that enrich our senses. Her subject is the act of showing, the gesture of exposing to view. In a museum, for example, the object is on display, made visually available. "That's how it is," the display proclaims. But who says so?
Bal's subjects are displays from the American Museum of Natural History, paintings by such figures as Courbet, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Rembrandt, as well as works by twentieth-century artists, and such literary texts as Shakespeare's Rape of Lucrece.

From the Back Cover
Mieke Bal shows how central to the study of culture are acts of exposure-of presenting, revealing, laying bare the 'truth' of the cultural objects one analyzes. Whether what is placed on public view is a picture, a poem, or another scholar's point of view, the rhetoric of persuasion in the humanities makes its claim to truth through specific conventions of display whose structures of power and authority are all too often hidden or masked from view.

1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War, by Benny Morris

This history of the foundational war in the Arab-Israeli conflict is groundbreaking, objective, and deeply revisionist. A riveting account of the military engagements, it also focuses on the war's political dimensions. Benny Morris probes the motives and aims of the protagonists on the basis of newly opened Israeli and Western documentation. The Arab side—where the archives are still closed—is illuminated with the help of intelligence and diplomatic materials.

Morris stresses the jihadi character of the two-stage Arab assault on the Jewish community in Palestine. Throughout, he examines the dialectic between the war's military and political developments and highlights the military impetus in the creation of the refugee problem, which was a by-product of the disintegration of Palestinian Arab society. The book thoroughly investigates the role of the Great Powers—Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union—in shaping the conflict and its tentative termination in 1949. Morris looks both at high politics and general staff decision-making processes and at the nitty-gritty of combat in the successive battles that resulted in the emergence of the State of Israel and the humiliation of the Arab world, a humiliation that underlies the continued Arab antagonism toward Israel.

Review
"'Morris's account seems admirable, because he is unafraid of upsetting both camps... His commitment to the pursuit of historical truth deserves as much admiration as his dismay at Arab intransigence commands sympathy... Morris's book is no mere military narrative, but a crisp, vivid introduction to the historical tragedy of Palestine.' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'Morris relates the story of his new book soberly and sombrely, evenhandedly and exhaustively... An authoritative and fair-minded account of an epochal and volatile event.' David Margolick, New York Times Book Review 'An ambitious, detailed and engaging portrait of the war itself - from its origins to its unresolved aftermath - that further shatters myths on both sides of the Israeli-Arab divide.' Glenn Frankel, Washington Post Book World"

From the Author

A conversation with Benny Morris

Q: How does 1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War relate to your previous work?

A: In the past, I have written about one particular aspect of the war—about the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem over 1947-1949, for example—or, more generally, about the course of the Zionist-Arab conflict from 1881 to 2000. In this book I address the whole of the 1948 War in its political and military aspects, taking in as well the international context and interventions, the Arab world, and the internal Israeli scene. I try to present a good overall picture of what happened and why, from the UN handling of the Palestine issue to the Israeli-Arab armistice agreements that ended the war.

Q: What do you think at bottom is the cause of the Arab-Israeli conflict?

A: I would say that there is a territorial dispute between two peoples who claim the same patch of land. It is a very small, patch of land, and so the idea of dividing it between the two is extremely problematic a the technical sense. But it is also a cultural-religious conflict between the Islamic East and the West. The Islamic Arab world sees Israel—as it sees itself—as an offshoot and outpost of the West in—in their view—a Muslim area and as an infidel, invasive presence. Israel and Zionism are seen by the Islamic Arab world, and the wider Islamic world, as illegitimate. This, at root, is the cause of the ongoing conflict. Were they to accord it legitimacy, the problem in Palestine/Israel would be soluble. At present, given this mindset, it isn't.

Q: Are there any lessons to be learned from the study of the 1948 War?

A: To be sure, many Israelis will learn that they must remain strong and technologically advanced; otherwise they will be overwhelmed by Arab numbers and fervor. The Arabs might learn that they must improve themselves, at least on a technological-scientific level, and better their societies and armies, if they hope to overcome Israel, though it is possible that if they do, they may lose the desire to destroy Israel. Outsiders may simply learn about the conflict and the nature of the two contending societies, at least as they were in 1948, and perhaps with certain implications for the present and future.

The most important book on 1948
By Seth J. Frantzman
In tackling the controversial and important, but gigantic, subject of the 1948 war, the Nakba, the Israeli was of independence, Mr. Morris has come full circle from his original study The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949 (Cambridge Middle East Library). This journey was a process that has already involved one revision of that celebrated thesis on the Palestinian refugees. Undoubtedly it was inevitable that this book had to be written in order not only to show the context and the military side of 1948 but also to show the Jewish side, the fate of Jewish areas conquered by Arabs, the fate of Jewish refugees from Arab lands, and the agency, the decisions, made by Arab leaders and local Arabs that led to the war.

There have been other stand alone studies of the war by Gelber, Palestine 1948: War, Escape And The Emergence Of The Palestinian Refugee Problem and The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and War in Palestine, 1948: Strategy and Diplomacy (Israeli History, Politics, and Society). But each has had its own weaknesses, either because it concentrates on the military aspects or because it is terribly biased.

Here, at last, is a full account that is not biased and is not overly focused on the military side and does not take for granted the conclusion that the Zionists would prevail and therefore all their actions should be judged as if they knew the results beforehand. Morris also sheds light on the fate of Christian Arab villages in the war and the many nuances of the war, including the very controversial issues of massacres and 'ethnic-cleansing'.

This book is a tour de force, a masterpiece of writing that should be read by anyone interested in the conflict, the Middle East, Israel, the Palestinians or the Holy Land. It strips away the clichés of 'conceived in sin' and the old narratives of right and wrong and heroism and suffering and presents a balanced historical view based on archival sources.

The organization of the book is first class. It is chronological and divides the war by phases, especially the civil war between November 29th, 1947 and May 15th, 1948. It gives the reader a complete understanding of the military situation and how the Jewish forces, which were composed originally of an underground militia and several smaller units, was able to gain mastery over not only Arab militias but also Arab armies that were supplied with modern European weaponry. How they overcame both the air forces, artillery and armour that was thrown at them and how they succeeded, using interior lines, to actually bring the war into the Sinai and Lebanon.

A Vital Work on the 1948 Israeli-Arab War
By Eric Maroney
In 1948 Benny Morris shows himself to be a first-rate historian with an accurate and detailed command of the events leading up to the first Arab Israeli War and the war itself. The book is primarily the military history of the conflict, and Morris is a well informed chronicler of military engagements. Morris, also considered one of the grandfathers of the "revisionist" school of Israeli historiography, here shows that he is not afraid to document both Jewish/Israel and Palestinian/Arab excesses and missteps in the war, opportunities missed or failed to be exploited. By and large Morris is very sympathetic to the Zionist enterprise in the Holy Land in this book. He views war in 1948 as inevitable given the demographic/strategic situation in Palestine since the arrival of the first Zionist settlers in the 1880s. This is in keeping with some of his more recent utterances about the Israeli Arab/Palestinian conflict. Given the pressure the Yishuv and early state of Israel were under, he states, conflict was unavoidable. In 1948 Morris seeks to show that calls for jihad against the Jews in Palestine was no mere bluster; that it was just as powerful (if not more so) source of Arab ire against Israel as the rising sense of Arab nationalism following WWII. It is here, I suppose, where Morris makes his most original contribution to the study of the 1948 war.

Beginning of the Cycle
By Keith A. Comess
Benny Morris, considered by many to be the"Dean" of Israeli Middle Eastern historians, is noted for "revisionist" works on the genesis of the Palestinian Arab refugee issue and rewriting of Israeli historical hagiography. This book, a comprehensive history of the dual-phase 1947-1948 war (civil war between Jews and Arabs antedating Partition, followed by invasion by a constellation of Arab professional militaries and various ad hoc militias) reviews the entire enterprise from both a military and political perspective.

The book can be divided into three segments: 1). an introductory section, which places in context the, 2). major middle-section, which exhaustively deals with military affairs and, 3). a summary/conclusion section, which presents the author's perspectives based on presently available evidence. As Arab archives have not been opened to researchers as of the 2008 publication date, this work cannot be considered "definitive", but certainly holds this status as of now.

There is one major shortcoming of this book: the lack of maps. The barrage of detail on virtually every military and paramilitary engagement becomes confusing and frustrating, as the reader cannot readily follow the strategy and tactics elaborated in the text. Further, many of the maps have inadequate legends, rendering the majority of them difficult to understand.

Morris attributes the Israeli military victories to a combination of better planning, better logistics, better preparation, better motivation, better training, fighting along "interior lines", internal cohesion in the form of communality of purpose and international sympathy. Surprisingly (at least for many readers) much of the initial political and military support came from the Soviet Union, later an ardent partisan of the Arab cause and foe of Israel. Czechoslovakian arms, supplementing those bought from international weapons dealers, helped turn the tide, in addition to the above factors. Conversely, lack of purpose, infighting, jockeying for advantage vis-a-vis rival regimes and cynical manipulation of Arab public opinion by Arab political elites did little to fashion a force capable of opposing the Jews. Heated rhetoric, in other words, did not serve as an adequate substitute for assiduous planning and training. Worse, innumerable inflammatory and "eliminationist" statements regarding the Jews tended to provoke, amplify and reinforce pre-existing reciprocal thoughts and statements in their enemies, hardening positions to the point of ossification; thus, the genesis of the current mess. The complexity of the situation is further enhanced by complicity of various Arabs in the acquisition of lands by the Jews. The branding of numerous Arabs as "traitors" by the mercurial Mufti of Jerusalem, Husseini, heightened internecine disputes, often with lethal consequences, not only for the "perpetrators", but also for the cause; this behavior continues to the present day.

As for presenting a "balanced" perspective on the "Middle East Problem", the author makes every effort to be scrupulously objective. Israeli military and paramilitary actions that resulted in war crimes against civilians were frankly acknowledged, as was the policy that underlay them, to wit, generally ad hoc, rather than the result of the product of Macheavellian scheming and malevolence. Whle Morris states that the Israelis committed more atrocities than did the Arabs, he notes that this was an accident of opportunity, rather than evidence of moral superiority of the Arabs and their fighters. His synopsis of the motivations of Zionist, British, Arab and Ottoman participants in the genesis of the modern Middle East is fair and bluntly accurate.

Certainly, one could conclude that the Zionist enterprise was not any more or less "fair" than the "Manifest Destiny" of the white invaders of the Americas (murdering, cheating, displacing and finally segregating the indigenous inhabitants into "reservations", where many continue to reside under rank and disgraceful conditions) or of the British in Australia, to cite but two examples. Similarly, the displacement of Arabs from their land is not much different from the massive population transfers that occurred after WW-II in, for example, the case of the German (civilian) expulsions from Poland and Czechoslovakia. Perhaps a better example would be the displacement/population exchange of millions of Hindus and Muslims during the Partition of India and Pakistan, which occurred around the same time (circa 1947). That division, accompanied by generally involuntary "repatriation" based on ethnic and religious affiliation, was accompanied by considerable violence, property damage/confiscation and left a residue of bitter inter-communal hatred, with intermittent terrorist attacks and threatened international war. These examples are not cited by Morris and are not offered by me as justifications; they merely illustrate a fundemental aspect of human nature.

In summary, this is an excellent history which would benefit from inclusion of more detailed maps to accompany the more important military engagements. It is objectively written, comprehensively referenced and the conclusions drawn by the author are buttressed by data and temperately drawn.

When I Fell From the Sky, by Juliane Koepcke

She was 17-years-old on a Christmas Eve flight 40 years ago to join her father for Christmas when the unimaginable happened. The Lockheed L-188A Electra, on the way from Lima to Pucallpa, flew directly into a thunderstorm. A strike of lightning left the plane incinerated and Juliane Diller (Koepcke) still strapped to her plane seat falling through the night air two miles above the Earth. Her survival is unexplainable and considered a modern day miracle. Her mother was among the 91 dead and Juliane the sole survivor. For 11 days she crawled and walked alone through the jungle, fighting for her survival again with hunger and despair her only companions as maggots ate their way into her wounds. "On Christmas Eve, 1971, 17-year-old Koepcke and her mother were flying from Lima to Pucallpa when their plane was struck by lightning during a freak storm. Catapulted from the plane two miles above the Peruvian rain forest, she landed in the jungle and miraculously survived. After regaining consciousness, she found herself alone and hurt, with a broken collarbone and a gash in her leg. Having spent a few years in the jungle during her youth, she was able to use the knowledge she had accumulated to survive, and, after an 11-day trek, she stumbled into the camp of three forest workers and was saved. Good but lacks details of survival experience
By B. McEwan
I bought this book because I happened to turn on the television and see the author, Juliane Koepcke, being interviewed. The bare bones of her story sounded amazing -- During a storm, the small airplane in which she and her mother were flying broke apart. While still strapped in her seat she fell several *miles* down into the Peruvian jungle. And survived! I had to know more.

As far as it goes, the book is good. The problem is that it doesn't go far enough. The author explains that she was able to survive because her parents were biologists and had taught her about the jungle, where she was raised for much of her life. The tone is matter-of-fact as she describes how she slept through her initial injuries, including a concussion, then got up and walked out of the jungle by following a stream. That was all well and good, but I wanted to know details. Exactly how did she muster the courage to do this? What did she eat? How did she cope with the isolation? The probability that her mother had not survived? Etc., etc.

I suspect that the lack of detail is because all of this happened to Koepcke back in the 1960s, when she was 17 years old. She never wrote about her experience until now, so it seems probable that she might not remember all of the small details that would make her story more compelling. The only reason that she wrote her book now is that she hopes to create a nature preserve in that part of Peru where she lived with her parents and wants visibility for her cause. Nothing at all wrong with that and, in fact, I think it's a great idea. It's just that the book is promoted as a survival story.

To be fair, one could say that the book is really more than a survival story in that Koepcke spends a lot of time talking about the jungle and why it is important to preserve it. She includes some interesting tidbits about the animals, especially the birds, that live there and also writes lovingly of the people and culture of the place. All of this adds enough substance to her story to make it book length, rather than merely a magazine article or television news feature.

Overall, When I Fell From the Sky is a decent read, but if you are looking for a survival story along the lines of Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place, this isn't it.

Incredible survival but story is 90 per cent off subject
By Warren P
Juliane Koepckes survival is one of the most miraculous to ever occur.

From the moment the twin turboprop Lanza passenger plane with ninety two passengers on board runs into a thunderstorm, gets struck by lightning disintegrating as it plummets to earth from two miles above to being found in a loggers hut it is hard to imagine the initial horror and then seemingly impossible predicament a young seventeen year old girl finds herself in.

Having stirred out of unconsciousness Juliane has found herself still strapped in her seat sitting upright and alive but the two adjoined seats next to her were empty (one had been her mothers).

The tree canopy of the jungle had cushioned the impact but she now finds herself alone concussed with a broken colour bone, a gash on her thigh and another in her upper back that later gets maggot infested (although she hadn't realised at the time she had ligament damage and a large splinter in her foot)

She is wearing a thin cotton mini dress, has one sandal on her foot and the glasses she relies on are gone.
A bag of sweets and nothing else.

With the added trauma of not knowing if her mother is alive or dead she wanders off soon discovering other dead passengers stuck head first into the earth still strapped in their seats with their legs in the air.
With these images and thoughts in her head she faces the inhospitable wilderness for the next eleven days.

What you will find in this book in regards to the actual crash and Juliannes survival is pretty thin and is basically covered in not much more than one chapter.

A keen conservationist Julianne had spent much of her childhood in the middle of the Peruvian rainforest where her parents founded a biological research station.
Initially after the accident she'd returned to Germany but her passion for the preservation of the forest and its habitat had become her passion and for someone who hated and tried to shun the publicity surrounding her survival this book is more her vehicle to get her conservation message across.

Unfortunately because Juliannes book is ninety percent not about what book purchasers are likely to expect I will only give it three stars.

It took her many years took to give a clearer picture of her survival a many false accounts by other people and media had been told.

Her delay in not wanting to tell and exaggerate her own story is a sign of integrity with an unselfish agenda being rainforest preservation.

This is not like another so called pumped up jungle survival story by Yossi Ghinsberg where his own contradictory accounts on utube, his book and the television show "I shouldn't be alive" are given as he milks his little misadventure for all the money he can.

Compelling and Revealing
By Literary Lass
The story follows Juliane, a young woman who really did fall from the sky, through her ordeal in the jungle, as well as her life in the aftermath of this incredible, miraculous survival. WHEN I FELL FROM THE SKY is a rare book because it not only details everything this young woman had to face while in a Peruvian rain forest--called a green hell--but it also explores the effects of survivor guilt, overnight celebrity, and trying to figure out one's place in the world. It's a great read because we see Juliane's struggle internally and externally. A very, very good autobiography that will have you wondering how you would fare in similar circumstances.

Black Sky, by William H. Lovejoy

‘Lovejoy has proven himself a master storyteller.’ - Clive Cussler

Cruising at a ‘black sky’ altitude of 130,000 feet, in the cockpit of the newly engineered XSO suborbital jet, U.S. Lieutenant Commander Dallas Grant reports the explosion of a Poseidon missile just minutes after its successful deep sea launch.

But then he uncovers a strange aerial attack by another suborbital craft of unknown origin equipped with military technology thought to be available only to the United States and the Soviet Union.

A silent and unidentified mystery is flying and is a threat that needs to be formally detected.

The most recent in a series of unexplained near-space disasters, the attacks are costing international state powers billions and eroding the reputation of all global satellite operation and research.

Classified data is valuable and as leaks appear emergency intelligence analysis profiles a plot by Nesei Aerospace Industries.

The Japanese munitions and communications giant could be attempting to control all black sky programs, a prospect which would undoubtedly create global chaos and economic collapse, and soon.

An atmosphere of anxiety and paranoia sets in awaiting authorisation from the President as cameras rouse suspicious, films are unaccounted for and an official record of unleaked classified data is called for.

Police are to be avoided, until a body warrants calling in the FBI.

Urgent Orders are sent to Grant and his colleague Dmitri to combine their 21st century black sky warrior strike squads in an apparently unofficial war that has already been initiated. Aware of the dangers both men consider the women they leave at home and whether they will ever return from this mission, or if they will be captured as prisoners.

Grant and his colleague Colonel Dmitri Vidorov are sent to fight the ultimate high-tech war to free the newest, most dangerous frontier of all…

Dog fights at 300k feet
By Norm
The author is well-versed in his subject with very technical explanations which fit well into his story. The novel is older, but although dated, kept me enthralled to the end. The old Russia vs. U.S. is there, but with a new adversary which requires their close cooperation to defeat. Makes me want to research and learn more about the possibilities of intra-orbital flight, both military and commercial. The characters were very realistic - both good guys and bad guys.

Suborbital experimental planes ran into opposition they did not expect...
By K. Chang
Black Sky is about a joint US Russia program to develop ultra-high flying sub-orbital craft (higher and faster than the vaunted SR-71) and how it ran into a mysterious opponent, who seem to be present whenever there is a satellite or payload launch malfunction. While the writing and flying is great, the plot seem to plod along slowly, as the opponents have been shown early, albeit separate from each other and you know they are going to collide, rather than presented as a mystery from one side's view only. There's some additional plot points about spies, intrigue, bungling bureaucracy, and so on that doesn't add too much to the plot, IMHO, of course. Reads a bit like slower paced version of a Dale Brown novel.

Recommended if you like the subject and his previous books. Not a must-read though.

A Changing Wind: Commerce and Conflict in Civil War Atlanta, by Prof. Wendy Hamand Venet

A compelling exploration of what real life was like for residents of Civil War–era Atlanta

In 1845, Atlanta was the last stop at the end of a railroad line, the home of just twelve families and three general stores. By the 1860s, it was a thriving Confederate city, second only to Richmond in importance. A Changing Wind is the first history to explore the experiences of Atlanta’s civilians during the young city’s rapid growth, the devastation of the Civil War, and the Reconstruction era when Atlanta emerged as a “New South” city.

A Changing Wind vividly brings to life the stories of Atlanta’s diverse citizens—white and black, free and enslaved, well-to-do and everyday people. A rich and compelling account of residents’ changing loyalties to the Union and the Confederacy, the book highlights the unequal economic and social impacts of the war, General Sherman’s siege, and the stunning rebirth of the city in postwar years. The final chapter of the book focuses on Atlanta’s historical memory of the Civil War and how racial divisions have led to separate commemorations of the war’s meaning.

Review
"Venet shows that to understand Atlanta’s early history, we must recognize the significance of a variety of ambitious speculators—entrepreneurs, politicians, soldiers, benevolent reformers, consumers, and slaves—who built, tore down, and rebuilt an urban social order. . . .  [A Changing Wind] deserves a wide readership."—Brian P. Luskey, The Civil War Monitor (Brian P. Luskey The Civil War Monitor)

“A solid account of the city’s experience, as told by the residents themselves. . . . The real value of A Changing Wind is found in Venet’s careful reconstruction of the wartime experience of everyday Atlantans. . . . The deep immersion into the day-by-day unfolding of the Civil War in the Gate City showcases Venet’s skills as a narrative historian. And although we know the outcome of the struggle, her depiction of the panicked city injects a sense of contingency and urgency rarely found in historical accounts of the Civil War. . . . A Changing Wind reminds us to pause amidst Atlanta’s relentless quest to be the city of the future and remember the remarkable nature of its past.”—Sean Patrick Adams, Civil War Book Review (Sean Patrick Adams Civil War Book Review)

The real Gone with the Wind
By Fuzzy's Mom
If you are a film buff or a Civil War history buff, you will find this a fascinating read. I do confess that while reading, I was comparing the text with the visions of Gone With the Wind.
The Civil War had disasterous consequences for the South. After an auspicious beginning, by 1863, the true toll was becoming only too evident in human and commercial costs. Atlanta, a community that had started to grow in the 1850's was supercharged when war was declared. It had so many things going for it, including location, that it became a hub. In fact, it was the second most important city in the South. With growth came wealth and Atlanta flourished in the early stages. Even the Unionists either supported the Confederate cause or stayed under the radar. By the third year, deprivations were felt by all and the flood of human misery swarming the city made life less pleasant. But it was not until the city was threatened by the Union forces that things got truly nasty.
We have seen the burning of Atlanta, thanks to David O Selznick, but the tales of the event, in the words of those who were impacted, are equally, if not more, powerful..
Ms. Venet has done an admirable job lacing together the stories of Atlantans during her rise, her pre-eminence and her emergence from the ashes like a phoenix after the war. It is sad that so little of what was there before no longer exists. Thanks to books such as this, we can still appreciate what that world was like.

Atlanta, Then and Now
By John Smith
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Venet at an event at the Atlanta History Center and purchased A Changing Wind from a local bookstore. The narrative in this book is brilliant. She weaves a story line which tells us of Old Atlanta and how the town has evolved into the global city we love today. This is a book for anyone who loves history or contemporary. I highly recommend it.
