Success does Leave Clues

I purchased this book for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, because I have had the distinct pleasure of working with the author in the past, indirectly, and he is always so knowledgeable, insightful, and inspiring. Second reason for my purchase was to challenge myself to doing things differently in 2014. It starts off by taking you through the five steps to learning and retention, how to market yourself, building a business plan/model, the psychology of why people buy, how customers see us, how much are you worth?, the main purpose of your business, four ways to grow your business, how much are our customers really worth? This was a great afternoon read. Miguel puts it in basic terms that easily executable and easily identifiable. Whether you a new manager or a tenured manager, I highly recommend this. Even for myself, I have been in management for many years but finding myself in some uncharted waters and this book really helped clear some thing for me and will be put to good use for 2014.

Great takeaways and not just more of the same

I've read a lot of books that claim they are going to help me reach my maximum potential, so I was skeptical that this one would be any different. I am happy to say this book was anything but "more of the same." There were multiple take-aways for me from this book, but the one that stood out the most was the chapter on the different types of salespeople. As a business owner, I know that sales is a part of my focus, whether I like it or not. Miguel's breakdown was so insightful and allowed me to find a way to implement a style that fit me.

About the Author

Mary Jo Hatch (PhD Stanford, 1985) is the C. Coleman McGehee Eminent Scholars Research Professor of Banking and Commerce, Emerita, at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor Gothenburg University, and an International Research Fellow of the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. Her research has been published in Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Academy of Management Review, European Journal of Marketing, Human Relations, Journal of Management Inquiry, Strategic Organization, Administrative Science Quartely, and Organization. She co-authored The Three Faces of Leadership (Blackwell) with M. Kostera and A. Kozminski. She received the 2011 Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management's Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division.
Ann L. Cunliffe is currently Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK. She has held positions at the University of New Mexico, California State University and the University of New Hampshire. She obtained her Master of Philosophy degree and Ph.D. from Lancaster University Management School. Recent publications in the field of leadership, sensemaking, reflexivity, and qualitative research methods are found in Human Relations, Organizational Research Methods and Management Learning. She was awarded the 2002 'Breaking the Frame Award' from the Journal ofManagement Inquiry for the article that best exemplifies a challenge to existing thought. Ann is currently co Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning, Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and a member of eight international journal Editorial Boards.

Dense read but organized well

This is a really, really dense read. It takes a lot of concentration and thought to read through the chapters, but I think it's organized well, provides great information and is broken into great chapters with key terms.

Clear explanations of organization theory

This was required reading in a graduate level course in strategic communication. I had absolutely no knowledge of organization theory before I took the course, but I found this book easy to understand. It gives a basic overview of different theories of how organizations are structured. As an introduction to organization theory, this book is recommended.

I had read the second edition of this book and I think there was a great evolution for the third edition.

About the Author

Kathleen T. Horning is the director of the Cooperative Children's Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was also a children's librarian at Madison Public Library for nine years.

Ms. Horning was the president of the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association in 2007, as well as president of the United States Board on Books for Young People in 2003. She has chaired or served on a variety of children's book award committees, including the Américas Award, the Charlotte Zolotow Award, the John Newbery, USBBY's Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, the Mildred L. Batchelder Award, the ALA/ALSC's Notable Children's Books, and the NCTE Lee Bennett Hopkins Award committees, and she was selected to deliver the 2010 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture.

She is the coauthor with Ginny Moore Kruse of Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults and of CCBC Choices, an annual publication reviewing the best books for children and young adults. She has a BA in linguistics and a master's degree in library and information studies, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.



Kathleen T. Horning is a librarian who has served on many ALA award committees and is part of the CCBC staff in Madison, Wisconsin. She is the former chair of the Newbery Award Committee.

A Critical Approach to Children's Books

Reading a book for the purposes of evaluation and review requires more attention to detail than reading a book for personal pleasure or for information. When you read to evaluate, your assessment of the book will ultimately affect other potential readers. It may make a difference as to whether or not a book is purchased for a library or school or as a birthday gift for a child you'll never meet. In fact, it may make a difference as to whether or not the book is read by a child at all. It is your professional responsibility to try to take your evaluation beyond a personal response.

This is not to say that your personal response doesn't matter. It would be impossible, of course, for you to put it completely aside --you are a reviewer, after all, not a robot! What the responsible reviewer strives for is an informed and reasoned opinion, clearly articulated so that others can learn about books they haven't seen.

In essence, a children's book reviewer reads and writes with two audiences in mind: (1) adults who read reviews to help them select books for children and (2) the children themselves. It may also be read by the author and publisher of the book in question; however, neither is the intended audience for your review. In other words, it is not your goal to write a review to stroke an author's ego or to pick a bone with a publisher.

Still, it is important to remember that most books for children are created with the best intentions in mind. No one sets out to produce a crummy book that kids will hate. If this is your initial assessment of a book you're reviewing, it would be unfair and unwise to let it stand as your final one without a great deal of further consideration. You'll need to take a closer look at the book. What was the author's intent in writing the book? What qualities did the editor see that led her to believe that the book merited publication? Why did the illustrator choose this particular style? The answers to all these questions have their origins in the history of the book's creation. While it isn't necessary for you know the details of a book's publishing history in order to review it, an understanding of the general context in which children's books are created will help you read more critically.

HOW CHILDREN'S BOOKS ARE PUBLISHED

Many publishing houses have divisions or departmentsthat are especially devoted to publishing books for young people. These were, for the most part, established in the 1920s and developed through the pioneering efforts of women such as Louise Seaman Bechtel, May Massee, Helen Dean Fish, Marian Fiery, and Virginia Kirkus, who were the first children's book editors. Unlike adult book divisions, which are driven by the consumer market (bookstore sales), children's book divisions developed largely in response to an institutional market. Sales to libraries and schools accounted for a high percentage of the total number of children's books sold. As library budgets began to shrink in the 1970s and 1980s, children's book publishers began to turn their marketing toward consumer sales as well, although the institutional market continues to be an important influence in the children's book industry.

There are books that are created specifically for one market or the other. Those that are produced for the institutional school market alone are called textbooks. They are generally sold to entire school districts rather than to individuals. They are also created in a separate division of the publishing industry that specializes in producing books to fit the exact needs of teachers working with specific school curricula and guidelines at various grade levels. Books that are produced with only the consumer market in mind are called mass-market books. These are generally produced as paperbacks or as picture books with inexpensive cardboard covers (such as Little Golden Books), and they may be sold in supermarkets, airports, dime stores, and convenience stores as well as bookstores. While there are publishers that specialize in producing mass-market books, most children's book departments produce mass-market books to some degree.

Books created for both the consumer market and the institutional market are called trade books. These are sold to schools and libraries. They are also sold directly to consumers through bookstores. Both quality and child appeal are taken into account when weighing the sales potential. From the publisher's point of view, the best kind of children's trade book is one that will succeed in both the consumer and the institutional markets and will continue to sell well for decades. This is the type of success guaranteed to a book that wins the Newbery or Caldecott Medal.

Most children's books start out as an idea in the mind of an author. That may seem obvious to you, but I mention it here because many people seem to have the notion that ideas start with publishers, who then assign them to authors. I often hear people ask children's editors: "Why don't you publish more books about X?" in a tone that suggests they hold editors personally responsible for the lack of X books. But editors don't tell authors what to write. They must wait for X to develop in the mind of the author, and then they have to determine if it's good enough to publish. The editors' role is to find and nurture the talents of authors and artists who will create good children's books. If they cast their nets wide enough, their catch may include an author who will come up with the idea of writing about X on her own.

Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the editor works with the author to help shape the book into its final form. An editor may make suggestions about chapters that need to be rewritten, characters that need to be developed, or ideas that need to be clarified. The ultimate responsibility for the writing, however, rests with the author.

Good tool for writers, too

This book is should be an essential for anyone writing for children. Horning covers all the genres, offering insight into pacing, character and plot. She better defines what makes a picture book, an early reader, a chapter book, a mid-grade and a young adult -- definitions that are often murky in writing books. Although this book may have been intended for librarians and others in the book industry, I recommend it highly for anyone contemplating writing for children.

A better subtitle would be understanding children's books

I get paid for writing reviews of children's books. Most of the books that I'm asked to review are art instruction books or picture books because I also am a freelance artist. I thought that I should read this book to make sure that I hadn't missed anything. However, the title is misleading. It is not really a book about "Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books". A better title would be understanding children's books. Only the last chapter in the book deals with reviewing children's books and that is the shortest chapter. Most of the book is comprised of a comprehensive overview of the different categories of children's books (non-fiction, poetry, picture, easy readers, transitional and fiction). If I had the opportunity to browse through this book in a regular bookstore, it would have stayed on the shelf.

Good book, a bit overstated

First let me say that this is a good book, I am glad that I purchased it. It codifies many of the characteristics of a quality children's book, and helps writers and reviewers exercise better critical judgment.

However, the author sometimes "puts a bit too fine a point on it," as a Brit might say. There is a section on the layout of early readers and transitional books which describes a specific target number of words per line, lines per page, text size, etc. I found this section quite helpful overall, and I specified changes to our style guide after reading it. But as useful as this material is, I felt the author's attempt to distinguish numbers of words per line between level 1, level 2 and level 3 early reader books was taking the process a bit too far.

Overall, this is a minor issue. As other reviewers have mentioned, writers will find value in the detailed descriptions of how children learn to read, how they react to themes, styles and plots (and how to recognize weakness in each), and how to target different age groups. Indeed, this is the only book I have found with detailed and usable information on these points.

Summary: Buy it if you are a creator or reviewer of children's books.

About the Author

ERIC CARTER is a lead developer on the Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) team at Microsoft. He helped invent, design, and implement many of the features that are in VSTO today. Previously at Microsoft he worked on Visual Studio for Applications, the Visual Studio Macros IDE, and Visual Basic for Applications for Office 2000 and Office 2003.

ERIC LIPPERT'S primary focus during his nine years at Microsoft has been on improving the lives of developers by designing and implementing useful programming languages and development tools. He has worked on the Windows Scripting family of technologies and, most recently, Visual Studio Tools for Office.

Preface

In 2002, the first release of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework was nearing completion. A few of us at Microsoft realized that Office programming was going to miss the .NET wave unless we did something about it.

What had come before was Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a simple development environment integrated into all the Office applications. Each Office application had a rich object model that was accessed via a technology known as COM. Millions of developers identified themselves as "Office developers" and used VBA and the Office COM object models to do everything from automating repetitive tasks to creating complete business solutions that leveraged the rich features and user interface of Office. These developers realized that their users were spending their days in Office. By building solutions that ran inside of Office, they not only made their users happy, they were also able to create solutions that did more and cost less by reusing functionality already available in the Office applications.

Unfortunately, because of some limitations of VBA, Office programming was starting to get a bad rap. Solutions developed in VBA by small workgroups or individuals would gain momentum and a professional developer would have to take them over and start supporting them. To a professional developer, the VBA environment felt simple and limited, and of course, it enforced a single language: Visual Basic. VBA embedded code in every customized document, which made it hard to fix bugs and update solutions because a bug would get replicated in documents across the enterprise. Security weaknesses in the VBA model led to a rash of worms and macro viruses that made enterprises turn VBA off.

Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework provided a way to address all these problems. A huge opportunity existed to not only combine the richness of the new .NET Framework and developer tools with the powerful platform that Office has always provided for developers but to also solve the problems that were plaguing VBA. The result of this realization was Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO).

The first version of VSTO was simple, but it accomplished the key goal of letting professional developers use the full power of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to put code behind Excel 2003 and Word 2003 documents and templates. It let professional developers develop Office solutions in VB.NET and C#. It solved the problem of embedded code by linking a document to a .NET assembly instead of embedding it in the document. It also introduced a new security model that used .NET code-access security to prevent worms and macro viruses.

The second version of VSTO, known as VSTO 2005, the version of VSTO covered by this book, is even more ambitious. It brings with it functionality never available to the Office developer before, such as data binding and data/view separation, design-time views of Excel and Word documents inside Visual Studio, rich support for Windows Forms controls in the document, the ability to create custom Office task panes, server-side programming support against Office—and that's just scratching the surface. Although the primary target of VSTO is the professional developer, this does not mean that building an Office solution with VSTO is rocket science. VSTO makes it possible to create very rich applications with just a few lines of code.

This book tries to put into one place all the information you need to succeed using VSTO to program against Word 2003, Excel 2003, Outlook 2003, and InfoPath 2003. It introduces the Office object models and covers the most commonly used objects in those object models. In addition, this book will help you avoid some pitfalls that result from the COM origins of the Office object models.

This book also provides an insider view of all the rich features of VSTO. We participated in the design and implementation of many of these features. We can therefore speak from the unique perspective of living and breathing VSTO for the past three years. Programming Office using VSTO is powerful and fun. We hope you enjoy using VSTO as much as we enjoyed writing about it and creating it.

The Bible of VSTO

When you see volume that huge (952 pages less the index), you are led into thinking that this is another documentation rehash.

Well, this is not the case here. The book's size is well justified by the fact that they present the material with the least rehash possible and give realistic examples that are mostly usable without any modification or customization at all. Quite impressive, IMHO, is the fact that they take it really seriously and make the extra effort to write samples that properly follow coding conventions and style. It is quite sad and disappointing to still see these days books by self-proclaimed gurus presenting FooBar-ish sample code (due to lack of taste or lack of imagination) without an regard or respect to the readers. Whatever happened to coding style?

Even though the book is written by two Microsofties that have actually worked intimately with VSTO, and that's a clear advantage, they sure utilize that in the finest way possible: almost every page has a code snippet, a diagram, a table, or even a screenshot. The prose is direct to the point and avoids going excessively over material that is already available elsewhere, making this book one of the few huge books that are actually not boring. Heck, you can actually start coding from the first chapter.

The two Erics have put together a very nice volume that shows how the programmability of Office is structured, and then how that object model can be used within the Visual Studio environment using special tools provided for that purpose. While you have to have the latest and greatest Office and VS software to follow along, their writing style is pretty straight-forward, and the reader should be able to pick up on the core concepts to understand the possibilities inherent in the integration. Even if you're not necessarily ready to fire up VS to program Word or Excel, Part 1 and 2 do a great job in showing the object layout of those Office components and how they can be manipulated. If you've never gotten into the code that can be added to a Word or Excel document, those two parts of the book would be worth it alone.

For me, I'm going to gain two benefits from this book. First, the object model information will help me better integrate Office into my Notes/Domino applications. I do some of that now, but the object model for Excel and Word have always been somewhat hazy to me. This book will help clarify those areas. Second, I think that knowing more about InfoPath will be part of my process as I seek to understand more about Microsoft collaboration application development. As a result, having this book should help me tie InfoPath into the Visual Studio environment and get a running start on my education.

Definitely a useful addition to your library if this is an area of interest to you...

Nice walkthrough of programming and embedding in Office

This is a solid walkthrough of building C# automation code for Office, and for writing code that integrates into Office. Excel is covered in depth. As are Word, Outlook and the fascinating new Infopath product that is an XML technologies client.

The writing is good. I could have used a few more non-screenshot graphics to illustrate the control flow between applications. But these are nit-picks. This is a solid book on automating and integrating with office using C# and .NET framework.
