A Great Read

This was my first Johathan Kellerman novel, and I approached it with hesitation. I'm not a big fan of "whodunits" or detective stories (I prefer other kinds of thrillers, stuff like the early John Grisham). And after the first few chapters I thought I made a mistake buying the book... but then the story and the characters started getting more interesting, and at some point it became really hard to put the book down (or turn it off, since I was listening to it on tape). After finishing it I feel like it was a great read. The plot is developed very well and there are great characters. The protagonist (the boy) is brought to life with great intelligence and credibility, and it's impossible not to like him. I think this a book that both fans of detective stories and readers who don't care too much for the genre but appreciate a good thriller with interesting characters will really enjoy.

I have read all of the Kellerman books when they first came out in hardback but when he drifted from the Alex D. books I figured that this would be another one of those off beat books that authors write because they get tired of writing the same characters all of the time. I also had my doubts about a 12 year old outwitting adults and living on his own on the street. So I didn't buy it. I was finally given a copy in paperback and read it. Was I surprised. The book held my interest from start to finish and I think it ranks up there with some of his best books. The book isn't just about a 12 year old but has a wealth of characters. Throughout the book you get to know all of these characters and how they interact. I recommend it highly.

Pretty good, but flawed

Billy Straight is probably the 5th or 6th Kellerman novel I've read and I'd have to say it's not one of my favorites. Overall, I enjoyed it but I thought it was a bit slow. As I was getting toward the end, I had to fight the temptation to skip to the last page and find out if I was right about who the killer was. I also thought the grandmother character was unnecessary. Her presence felt "tacked on" and contrived to give Billy someplace to go. I enjoy Kellerman's books enormously, but this one could have used a little editing.

Beautiful Piano Solos

This is for the late intermediate - advanced player. The arrangements are beautiful - the arrangement of La Vie En Rose is worth the price of the book alone.

Hal Leonard has great books, this being one of them

Ya know, I think I'm hooked on Hal Leonard books. Their instructional books just superb. This book. .. a definite keeper. I would call it intermediate more so than beginner. Definitely have to know how to read and play. Buy it. If you're advanced you'll still have fun. If you're a beginner you will have a few songs you can play or at least a great book as a goal. Or play the melody right hand. . Plenty of songs to choose from for that.

A great piano solos book - beautiful music

I consider this Piano book one of the best I have ever played. I am an advanced pianist who hasn't played in 30 years, but I add chords as I go along. It tends to be a little easier than an intermediate or advanced song book, but it is well worth purchasing and adds hours of enjoyment to play all the piano solos.

Start with your Natural Child, the part that is adventurous, happy and free. It will be hard for your Natural Child to come out and play if your Adult, Parent or Unnatural Children get in the way.

Adult is your words-data-logic, computer brain. It has an enormous amount of information about the world, knowledge essential for your survival. But your Adult is usually aware of only superficial aspects of the natural world. For instance your Adult glances at a tree, quickly classifies it as a tree, using 2 or 3 defining characteristics, and pays no further attention to it. The real tree is now a “tree”.

Our schools and much of our culture reward that kind of shift and you become a proficient word pusher who hasn’t felt the bark of a tree in years. Your Adult will want good, logical reasons why you should spend time walking down the street acting like a kid.

Your Parent may also give you plenty of trouble. It’s your authoritarian, judgmental part that expects you to measure up. Taking a silly walk in the park when there’s work to be done is not measuring up. You should be finishing that report, cleaning your bedroom, and reading a good book instead of acting weird and attracting the attention of strangers. What good is that going to do anybody?

Your Parent also only notices surface aspects of Reality. “That grass needs cutting!” “That sidewalk is filthy!” “She shouldn’t be wearing those colors!” “Why are you wasting your time on a stupid walk?”

To help reassure your Adult and Parent, tell them the book you are reading told you to, and it’s written by a PhD psychologist and he knows what he’s talking about.

Then there are your Unnatural Children, shaped and scrambled when you were a tiny tyke playing in the sandbox. We all grew up in environments that were both toxic and nourishing. Unnatural Children are created by under- or over-controlling parents, dangerous neighborhood, serious illness, lousy schools, etc.

It never occurs to a beaten down Unnatural Child that puddles are to splash, strange doors are to open, weird clothes are to wear, and frogs are to sleep with. A rebellious Unnatural Child does them all.

Everybody has both beaten down and rebellious Unnatural Children because nobody grows up in a perfect environment, or has perfect genes. Your beaten down Unnatural Child will be too scared to go on that walk. Your rebellious Unnatural Child will tell me to go jump in a cold lake.

Introduction to Berne

While short, Ernest Kinnie's work is an excellent intorduction to Eric Berne's work on Transactional Analysis, and anyone who has an interest in this theory will find this either a good introduction or a valuable aid for their memory, as Kinnie explains well Berne's core elements of the Child, Adult and Parent ways of engaging with other people as well as looking at the more important games people play with each other.

ONE OF THE GREAT SELF-HELP BOOKS. I AM READING KINDLE VERSION. I READ THE ORIGINAL YEARS AGO. BUT HIS FOCUS IS STILL HELPFUL FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO IMPROVE.
