Clausewitz: A Very Short Introduction, by Michael Howard

Karl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) is considered by many to have been one of the greatest writers on war. His study On War was described by the American strategic thinker Bernard Brodie as "not simply the greatest, but the only great book about war." It is hard to disagree. Even though he wrote his only major work at a time when the range of firearms was fifty yards, much of what he had to say remains relevant today. Michael Howard explains Clausewitz's ideas in terms both of his experiences as a professional soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and of the intellectual background of his time.

Succinct, lucid, a good beginning.
By Epops
Clausewitz is notoriously difficult to understand, according to Prof. Howard, because so much of what he wrote was not intended for publication. As Clausewitz himself stated, he wrote a "collection of materials from which a theory of war was to have been distilled." Professor Howard, the co-author of the standard English translation of Clausewitz, begins that distillation process in these few pages.

He first places Clausewitz in context, with a review of his family origins and military experience. He was commissioned as an officer in the Prussian Army at the age of 12, fought in his first campaign in 1793 at the age of 13 against the forces of Revolutionary France on the Rhine and then in the Vosges. In 1806 he was captured following the French defeat of Prussian forces at Auerstadt, a subsidiary of Napoleon's great victory over the Prussians at Jena. He then spent two years in captivity as a prisoner of war in France. When later the Prussian king allied himself with Napoleon, Clausewitz resigned from the Prussian Army and joined the Russian Army, where he participated in the Russian victory over Napoleon at Borodino. When the Prussian King, Frederick William III, eventually joined the Alliance against Napoleon in 1813, Clausewitz became an advisor to General Blucher during the Leipzig campaign, though still in Russian uniform. After being allowed by the King to rejoin the Prussian Army he became chief of staff to the Prussian III Corps, which acted as a blocking force at Waterloo. He then spent 12 years at the Prussian Army War College, where he spent much of his time writing his most famous work, On War. He died in 1831, at the age of 51, in a cholera epidemic in Breslau, where he had been sent to institute a cordon sanitaire to prevent the disease from spreading.

Clausewitz' ideas were formed in the cauldron of the transition from formalized 18th century warfare to the total war of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. The successive Prussian defeats had a profound effect on him, stimulating a rethinking of the theory of warfare as it evolved in his lifetime. There is much debate about how much of his work applies only to the particular circumstances of his era and how much is applicable to warfare in general.

He is frequently contradictory and ambiguous, which is not surprising, given the extreme complexity of the human social phenomenon he is attempting to analyze. These are a few of his better-known concepts:

- the FRICTION of war (now often called the "FOG of war")
- successful warfare always involves a FIGHT, although paradoxically, an "unfought fight", such as the nuclear exchange that didn't happen during the Cold War, can have as much effect as an actual fight
- the necessity of attacking the enemy's CENTER
- the power of the DEFENSE
- the necessity of SUPERIOR FORCE for VICTORY
- the importance of MORALE
- the concept of WAR AS AN EXTENSION OF POLITICS

Prof. Howard provides a good summary of the way Clausewitz influenced the ideas and operations of the great wars of the 20th century - WWI, WWII, and the Cold War - and gives guidance for further study. He recommends in particular three books:

Peter Paret - "Clausewitz and the State"
Azar Gat - "The Origins of Military Thought from the
Enlightenment to Clausewitz"
Raymond Aron - "Penser la guerre, Clausewitz"

There is as yet no complete English translation of Clausewitz' works.

Highly recommended as an introduction to the study of history's foremost philosopher of warfare.

A very helpful introduction to Clausewitz and "On War".
By Jaydee Larson
I give this book 5 stars for its thorough introduction to Clausewitz and his opus "On war".

The book is well-structured and presents Clausewitz' ideas in a informative way with a good balance of trivia, facts and well founded analyses and interpretations, while resisting the temptation to bore the reader with nerdy details. With this introduction in hand, I feel safe on embarking on a full reading of On War.

Cliff Notes to Clausewitz
By COL K E HAMBURGER
Clausewitz is notoriously difficult for the novice to master -- some would argue that no one has ever entirely "mastered" Clausewitz. Be that as it may, a legion of frustrated amateur strategists can attest to the difficulty of picking up Clausewitz's "On War" and trying to read it through without a guide. In the "Clausewitz" volume in the Past Masters series, the novice as well as the experienced strategist can gain an introduction to the master's life, experiences, and writings that will make the first reading intelligible and that will serve as a quick review of Clausewitz's main concepts in a format that can easily be read in an evening.
This is a book that should stand next to "On War" in every strategist's library.

The Crucifixion of Ministry: Surrendering Our Ambitions to the Service of Christ, by Andrew Purves

As a pastor, do you ever get the feeling that no matter what you try, nothing much seems to change?

That is because the ministries themselves are not redemptive--they are not up to you. Only Jesus' ministry is redemptive. Jesus has to "show up."

Theologian Andrew Purves explores at the deepest level the true and essential nature of Christian ministry. He says that the attempt to be an effective minister is a major problem. Ministers are "in the way." He radically claims that ministries need to be crucified. They need to be killed off so that Christ can make them live.

Rooting church service in Christ's own continuing ministry, Purves provides a vision for students and practicing clergy to reclaim the vital connection between Christ and participation in his ministry today, even if it means letting Christ put to death the ministries to which pastors cling so closely.

A radical appraisal for a critical malady affecting the life of the Christian church written in plain, down-to-earth language.

Review
Containing only five chapters, this book is packed with a lot of truth, helpful ideas, and suggested practices. A book like this will help current seminarians and future miniters to avoid some of the pitfalls of ministry. Purves does a great job in going to the text in numerous places to get the reader to see the biblical truth instead of the author's ideas. (Terry Lange, SharperIron, (sharperiron.org), October 2, 2008)

Certainly worth recommending to pastors and others in full-time ministry. (Rodney Stent, The Lamplighter, May 2008)

All in all, the significance of the subject matter and its general readability make this book an important read for those wishing to locate their practical ministry on the horizon of the doctrinal tradition of the Church. (Phil Sumpter, Chrisendom, May 4, 2008 ay 4, 2008)

Purves challenges pastors to look deeply at their ministry and realize that it is not theirs but God’s. He encourages pastors to allow themselves to be used by God rather than attempt to do things for God. His simple argument is stated eloquently and most certainly bears repeating to an individualistic world. (Pulpit Helps, October 2007)

"Every pastor and Christian leader needs to read this book--about once a year. It is a much-needed wake-up call to remember what we all so often forget: it's Christ's ministry, not ours, and for his ministry to manifest itself through us, we must first die to ours. Written with clarity and passion, there is much here that is theologically rich, spiritually challenging and practically relevant. The North American church today desperately needs to heed the message of Andrew Purves's book." (Stephen A. Seamands, professor of Christian doctrine, Asbury Theological Seminary)

"Andrew Purves has peeked inside our ministerial closets. He has pulled aside the façade of our pastoral garb. He exposes the fear and exhaustion so many of us feel but none admit. Then he offers us pastors the real hope found in reconnecting to the true Source of all ministry. The church would be transformed if pastors dared to read, and practice, this book." (Gerrit Dawson, senior pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge)

"I have been in Professor Purves's classes as he lectured on this theology of pastoral ministry. I watched our seminarians move from dismay to embracing it as a surprising new vision of ministry. It was like witnessing the crucifixion and resurrection, which is his point. I have been a pastor long enough to know that without this vision of what Jesus Christ is doing in human lives, no one will last long in the ministry." (M. Craig Barnes, pastor, Shadyside Presbyterian Church, and Meneilly Professor of Ministry, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary)

"This book is exactly what we in pastoral ministry have needed for a long time: 'strong medicine' to not only keep us from the burnout so many are facing in our time, but also, and primarily, to enable us to thrive in the service of Jesus Christ. Andrew Purves takes us into the heart of ministry, into the heart of the only ministry that actually 'works,' into the ministry of the risen Jesus, and teaches us how to participate in Jesus' vicarious humanity and, in union with him, to cooperate with Jesus' ongoing work in and for the world. As I read these pages, everything in me cries, 'Yes! This is the way to live and serve.'" (Darrell Johnson, associate professor of pastoral theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia)

About the Author
Andrew Purves (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is Jean and Nancy Davis Professor of Historical Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous books including Reconstructing Pastoral Theology: A Christological Foundation, The Crucifixion of Ministry and The Resurrection of Ministry. He is an ordained Presbyterian minister and has three grown children with his wife Catherine, who is minister of the Bellevue United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh.

A Crucifying Read!
By Wyatt Fenno
Andrew Purves asks, "Is ministry something we do, or is ministry something Jesus does?" Well, the answer is yes and yes. However, while we might have a ministry, it is important to know and confess that our ministry is derivative. Being "derivative" means that it depends in every way upon the continuing ministry of Jesus Christ. In other words, the ministry of Jesus displaces us from the throne of "my" ministry--with the awareness that it was never really mine in the first place.

Ministry is a theological act. This means that it has everything to do with God. Andrew writes: "What makes ministry theological is what makes it ministry: God acts." In ministry, God acts today as he has always acted-in, through, and as his personal incarnation, the Living Word, Jesus Christ. Thus, God acts-by the grace and presence of the Holy Spirit-through the continuing ministry of Jesus Christ, who is present to and for those whom make themselves available to him.

Andrew suggests that the first and central question to ask related to ministry is this: "Who is Jesus Christ and what is he up to?" The answer leads to the second vital question: "How do we get in on Jesus' ministry?" The truth is: people don't need us; they need Jesus. This means that in doing ministry, our grateful response and moral obligation is to bear witness to him.

Purves writes: "To participate in Christ's ministry means that I share in his life. Sharing in his life means that who he is and what he is up to defines the whole work of my ministry. Wherever Christ is and wherever we are joined to him, there truly is the intentional, disciplined and faithful ministry of the church. It is not our ministries that make Christ present; it is the present, living Christ who makes our ministries possible" (p 53).

If we live and minister with this kind of intent, then we will live as those who are truly crucified with Jesus Christ (cf., Gal 2:20). Amen.

In the World and yet, not of the World...
By Edward W. Rogosky
We who live a Christian life within the world are faced with a constant challenge: that challenge being that we are to be in the world and not of the world. The struggle of ministry for many years has been that we appear to be very much similiar to the social services agencies of the world. I would state that many churches have this point of view. Hence, the demands made upon the pastors are very similiar to the demands made upon the social service structures of the world. According to Dr. Purvis, the outcome is predictable: burnout, dropout or worse.

Historically, this has never been the church's calling, for that would be to "be in the world and of the world at the same time".

So, we are called to be "in the world and yet, not of the world",and as a result we cannot have the same expectations that the social service agencies have in our working within the world. Pastors are not merely fulfilling a secular job description. Indeed, secular job expectation would be impossible within such a vocation. Instead, we would need to discern the mind of God. Pastors are to believe and live as if God is able to work and demonstrate changes within an individual Christian's life. The pastor cannot change a person's life.

Dr. Purves's book is written very much within that Christian stream of thought that says ministry is about a lifelong journey with the Christian faith, as it is not something that we can absorb through the culture. This changes the face of pastoral ministry as it is practiced by some. Instead, Christianity is counter-cultural while still examining the culture and using some of the tools provided, (panenthism)but always with an eye upon God and God's Will.

Deep, brilliant, and all about Christ
By Riesling Rev
In this little but very profound book, Dr Purves has given all pastors a way to approach ministry that will bring life and freedom and joy rather than stress, burden, and weariness. It's so easy to think that we have to do it all. Indeed, that is our great sin as pastors. We forget that we are not the Savior. I imagine that this book would be particularly good for "successful" ministers who have bought into the idea that their brilliance and hard work has brought about their success. Ministry, particularly in a big church setting, has a tendency to inflate egos. Ingesting a little Purves will provide a good remedy. I recommend this book to all pastors and anyone else engaged in ministry. Read it several times. Read it once a year. Send it to all your friends.

The book has a range of speedy meals, from flash-roasted fish to microwave peach chutney for pork chops. There are soups, skillet meals, fresh dinner salads, and more. The 170 recipes and 70 color photos make dinner easy and appealing.  The recipes use Paleo convenience foods, such as salt-free canned tomatoes and frozen vegetables, and draw on the techniques that Dr. Cordain and his family developed for their own busy lives. Also included is the Paleo Pantry, with recipes for Paleo condiments and spice blends to enliven meals throughout the week.

Non-Cook Prepares 5 Dinners a Week Now Thanks to Real Paleo
By Galileo's Gang
I am a recent Paleo convert and I chose this book because of the title. Other Paleo cookbooks looked good, but these recipes looked tasty and easy to make. I also felt that trying the cookbook by the leader in Paleo was probably a good idea. I have tried several "Fast and Easy Recipe" cookbooks, and have been disappointed that the recipes were neither fast, easy nor tasty. I can say that Cordain's Real Paleo cookbook is filled with fast, easy and tasty recipes. I am not a chef, so I am thrilled to put a healthy dinner on the table in an hour or less. In time, I am sure I will be able to prepare these meals in 30 minutes. I must admit that I prior to this purchase, I have had little success preparing daily meals for my family: I have felt accomplished if I prepared 2 of 5 weekday meals. I have used Cordain's cookbook for 3 weeks now. After the first week, I wanted to write a review, but thought I had better give it more time before shouting from the mountain tops. This is a fabulous book. I have prepared 15 different recipes from this book, and every meal has been well received from all my children and my husband. I am now able to consistently prepare 5 meals a week for my family. I cannot recommend this book enough. The only possible downside is that he does not use salt. I have been true to the recipes except twice when I added salt to the scallops and one time to a flank steak. Since my problem prior to beginning Paleo was sugar, these saltless recipes are not a problem for me; I appreciate the flavors of the recipes. My kids and husband sometimes add Spike. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

... are truly Paleo they are not as fast and easy as I would have liked
By Jerry Sumpter
Although the recipes are truly Paleo they are not as fast and easy as I would have liked. It seems most recipes call for added
recipes (sauces, spice mixures, dressings) to make the dishes which can be time consuming. I would have liked recipes to
be a bit simpler as I am new to this type of diet.

This is my favorite paleo cookbook to date
By Denice R. Hubbard
This is my favorite paleo cookbook to date. Love the quick meals in 30 minutes or less. Easy recipes to make and follow. He does not salt anything but in most cases, it's fine without it. I do find myself adding a tad of salt to some but overall, this is filled with many tasty easy to make recipes. Have made over 30 recipes in the short time I've had it and the majority are very good.

exceptional humans
By CAS
I really enjoyed this book and so did my two boys who are both football fans and players. There wasn't much my kids could learn from it though, like hard work or that sticking with something pays off in the end...there is little of that in these stories.

I was so surprised that everyone of these players was exceptional as a young child. In some ways this could make the book a little predictable but what it tells me when read from cover to cover is that not one of these players was an underdog or a "late-bloomer." Everyone could see their in-born-talent with the exception of one goal-keeper at the age of nine. In fact when asked by parents, was your child born with this exceptional talent or did they learn to work hard...every parent states...it was in-born....and yes then they learned to work hard but first they had the amazing talent above everyone else.

This is a surprize to me because I had believed some of the hype-and false stories I had read about some of these players like Drogba being a late bloomer and not being a stand-out until he was in his late teens. Well, it is just not true if these stories are true. These players all of them are genetically exceptional and yes then as they got older they also combined that with hard work and had good families to guide them.

So given these stories I would say the hype about 10,000 hours of training (working harder than everyone else) should be qualified as this: If you have a 1 in million child who you coach or parent, who everyone (not just you or some coach you pay) around you thinks is the most amazing kid they have ever seen, have them get their 10,000 hours in, and teach them to work hard, and if they are lucky they may be one of these players.

These are cinderella stories and not really about working hard and over-coming those who doubt your talent (a myth in soccer). These players it seems were all touched with fairy dust.

Very, very superficial
By Textreader
These positive reviews puzzle me. I bought the book because of them and having read it I really disagree. Each athlete is given the same handful of questions and thus the answers are very predictable and similar. "I had a lot of talent and you have to work hard", over and over again. There is absolutely no dept here and nothing to learn. It is like a quick talk by the pitch, like an interview for television. Probably the author has emailed the questions and pasted the answers. You also get a superficial "life story" of each player. And clearly there has been no editing of the book, it is full of spelling mistakes and clumsy language. Avoid, forget.

Nothing but the best! This author might be onto something great.
By Creative General
The author takes you behind the scenes, up-close and personal, on the journey of experience that some of the world's greatest soccer players had to endure.

Most of the perspectives will come directly from family and coaches. But you'll also be pleasantly surprised to hear from the athlete. He does this well with an interview question and answer format, which follows with some pertinent history of the athlete.

After reading a couple of the chapters, you'll soon sense that this book is destined for table tops across the globe. There is so much good information packed inside that you will want to share it with everyone around you.

This book is divided into short and concise chapters, solely concentrating on one athlete at a time. This makes the reading convenient for anyone with a life full of interruptions.

If you too have an inquisitive mind, then you'll appreciate the hard work he's done in getting his 500 plus questions answered. This is probably a feat in itself.

What I especially like, is the approach the author uses... going to the top and getting first-hand information on those who watched the athlete grow from an unknown and transforming into today's superstar. I recommend this book to anyone, and of all ages or background, who wishes to gain an inside perspective in becoming the best, or to provide encouraging support to those who are passionate about their field.
