I wish architects and designers would think of the usability of their published materials, not just their architectural designs.

I will keep this book, but if I had checked/known in advance that it would be hard to read, I would probably not have bought it.

Clear, concise, well-organized text

I'm using Dan Hosken's book for my "Introduction to Music Technology" course in fall 2010 at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. After much frustration with another text last spring, I was delighted to read Dan's book over the summer. He covers the crucial topics, including basics of acoustics/psychoacoustics, how computers function, digital audio, audio equipment, mixing/composing software, notation software, pedagogical software, sampling, and synthesis. He explains things clearly and includes plenty of figures and photos.

My only criticism is that he spends much time on synthesis and sampling relative to what I cover in an introductory music technology course. I like both topics, but feel that the deeper discussion of them would be better placed in a book on composing computer music rather than an introductory class. Nevertheless, better too much than too little; and so this is a minor issue. I'm very happy with this book.

Easy to read, and very informative. I recommend this to anyone who at any point is using audio recording/editing software, instruments that require amplification, microphones, recording equipment of any sort, mixing boards...excellent for beginners.

Don't buy the Kindle Edition

My rating is not in relation to the contents of the book (I haven't been able to read it yet), it is just a warning for others to NOT buy this book in its Kindle edition.

Being a technical book, it has a lot of mathematical symbols, which are not displayed by Kindle!! only a little square is displayed instead of different symbols (less than, greater than, etc.). Also while using my computer to read it (Kindle for PC) NONE of the Figures are displayed!

With no figures and no symbols in a technical book, this kindle version is useless. I'm returning it and buying the paper version.

the only book available for discrete events in OO, and HLA

The first edition of this book appeared in 1976 and had only one main author, Bernard P. Zeigler, who authored other appreciated classic text books. The first edition was already a must read for the simulation community, which has been asking for an updating. The new edition is not just a re-edition with small corrections. The advances in simulation and modelling techniques helped to design a really new edition, necessary to meet the need for a theoretical foundation. Bernie Zeigler developed a unifying formalism DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification). With DEVS it is not only possible to specify discrete event systems; it is also particularly suited to integrate both continuous and discrete paradigms for modelling and simulation (discrete time & differential equations). DEVS features are also present in the systems theory.
The first theme of this book is to propose a sound methodology for the construction of complex system models based on the unifying concept of the DEVS Bus. This concept enables the mapping into DEVS of different models expressed in various formalisms such as Petri nets, Hierarchical block diagrams, cellular automata. The second theme focuses on parallel and distributed simulation of discrete event models. Distributed simulation has the potential to support the co-existence of multiple formalisms in multimodels.
I will try to depict the merits and demerits in comparison to other current and past books. First of all, being in the simulation field for ten years now, I have to cite some complementary references. Without giving an exhaustive list of all recent valuable books in the simulation field, we can find other high quality simulation text books ; for instance for continuous simulation [Cellier 1991], for general purpose simulation [Fishwick 1995] or even for more specific object-oriented simulations [Hill 1996]. However, I must admit that this Theory of Modelling and Simulation¡¨ is the only book available to help construct efficient object-oriented simulations of DEVS models on parallel and distributed environments. In addition, modelers who have to deal with HLA (High Level Architecture) compliant simulations will find in the book the reference to design integrative simulations.
The best significant features of this book are:
*The presentation of a comprehensive framework for continuous and discrete event modelling and simulation The exploration of the mathematical foundation of simulation modelling.
*The discussion of system morphisms for model abstraction and simplification *The presentation of a new approach to discrete event simulation of continuous processes. *The discussion of model credibility and interoperation * The highlighting of design concepts like such as modular and hierarchical model composition. *The presentation of a sound methodology to achieve parallel and distributed simulation models.
The reviewer only regrets the lack of public availability for DEVS platforms, despite the quotation of a web site, simulation environments (such as DEVSJAVA) are a real need to fully understand practical and theoretical aspects.
This book has multiple facets. From my teaching and scientific experience, I would say that the primary audience comprises engineers, scientists and other technical people working in academic institutions, but there are many chapters particularly well suited for students at a graduate or even undergraduate level. In my opinion, this was not the case of a previous book from the main author [Zeigler 1990] which was an excellent reference for specialists. I am now impressed by this ability to communicate at various levels. I strongly recommend this book for the reader interested in any kind of simulation and modelling, its impact on research in control will surely be recognized.

A simulation ideas framework

This book have a bad title, must be "Theory of Modeling and Simulation with DEVS".
There are not a real Integration about Discrete Event and Continuous Complex Dynamic Systems. Only a Discret Event Systems Specification (DEVS), nothing more that DEVS. The book is anything but no visual simulation, no numerics management, no probabilities, no DAE-equations, no research operations, no object simulation, no ...
The DEVS concept born with the promise of join different formalism in the 70's (join discreet and continuous simulation), but yet the concept actually in the book is very primitive and not consider real numerical methods in only one layer (remember that many real commercial simulation software is not based in DEVS concepts. Why?, -Maybe, the DEVS concept have a rigorous and innecesary strictness in the framework concepts in modeling and simulation.)
For other hand, this book have bad thigs and good things.
Bad things:
- The algorithms presented are only fragments of pseudocode like C++ (or Java?). Where is all framework code?.
- The concepts are not in a today systemic/cibernetic vision. This is bad, because the definitions and concepts are yet of 70's. (the book is a second edition, where is the change?).
- Actually the DEVS is considered the corner stone of basic theory of discreet simulations according to autor and others, but in a book there are not real simulations for probe the theory.
- Where is THE continuous complex dynamic systems?.
- Lack of code production of real numerical and computacional methods.
The good things:
- If you don't know what is a DEVS this book is your resp.
- Is a source of excellent ideas, in special the study of Quantization and the Systems Design and Environments of M&S (IV Cap.).
Finally, the best of book is not the DEVS concepts (the book is 80% about DEVS), is the math-way how the Autor try define a basic Simulation Framework independent of the model.
Because the above, is a must have in a simulations books.

In retelling the story of a near-impossible sports comeback in 1935, Schaap intricately chronicles the history of boxing during the Depression. Jimmy Braddock, an Irish-American heavyweight who began his career as a light heavyweight, was determined to win the title until a series of jinxes hit: the stock market crashed, he broke his dominant hand and a succession of losses crushed his spirit. Schaap, host of ESPN's Outside the Lines, goes into captivating detail on the brawny, reserved Braddock, who, at his lowest moments, was reduced to living off government relief and doing grueling work on the Hoboken, N.J., docks. But the story is as much about Max Baer, the lovably clownish and handsome heavyweight Braddock defeated as a 10-to-one underdog. The account is inspiring: no one ever thought Braddock would come back, especially against Baer, who'd previously killed two men in the ring. Braddock succeeded with the help of his manager, the short, fast-talking Joe Gould; the two were "the sport's favorite odd couple." Boxing enthusiasts will be more than satisfied by Schaap's meticulous account, which includes round-by-round details of the fight, as well as profiles of other fighters of the era. "Cinderella Man" Braddock's life makes a heck of a story, but there hasn't been a biography of him in decades. Schaap, an ESPN veteran, portrays Braddock as a man of his time. After a promising start in the late 1920s, Braddock--a lovable family man with three kids--ended up as broke and beaten as the country. But with the help of a fast-talking manager whose passion for the sport was equaled only by Braddock's own, the fighter managed to emerge from his Great Depression to make an improbable run at the title, culminating in the defeat of the gargantuan Max Baer in 1935. Like a SportsCenter puff piece, Schaap's account can get repetitive and doesn't always delve deep. But the fights here are crisply drawn, and Braddock's upsets have that Hoosiers thrill factor. Plus, it's refreshing to find a boxing story where the right guy wins, nobody cheats, and most everyone lives happily ever after. John Green

Much better than the Movie, and a truly wonderful story about a wonderful human being

Before reading this book I was vaguely familiar with James J. Braddock as someone interested in boxing, especially Heavyweights. As a side note, that essentially stopped several years ago when boxing degenerated into an alphabet soup set of "champions" and it became hard to maintain any interest in the sport, but I digress. I had seen the movie "Cinderella Man," based on this book, so I was curious about those things in Braddock's life that Movies always have to cut out, or change. So my first comment is that, as much as I liked the movie, the movie has only a slight resemblance to this real life story. Much was left out (obviously due to screen time constraints), but also much was changed. This book provides much more background and life story information about Braddock than the movie could ever show, and it's all good and written very well. The author details Braddocks struggles (and successes) not only in the ring but in life, drawn vividly against the Great Depression. Braddock was a rock solid, hard working, honest, and honorable man. He personified the Horatio Alger story, in which good things happen to those who are good people and work hard at being so. The book also serves as an in-depth reference and insight into what many call the glory years of boxing, with names like Jack Dempsey, Jim Corbett, Max Schmeling, Joe Louis, Primo Carnera, Max Baer, and others. Max Baer is portrayed completely differently than in the movie. In the movie he was a wiseguy smart aleck who had killed two men in the ring. In the book, he was basically a reasonably nice guy with immense physical gifts but very little interest in boxing. The fight between Baer and Braddock for the Heavyweight Championship is completely different than in the movie. The movie angle is admittedly more dramatic, but in reality Baer had not trained hard for the bout, aimed for a knockout in the early rounds, and Braddock stayed away from his big right hand until Baer tired after the 7th round and Braddock mounted up the points - and also gave Baer a pretty good beating. It was not a one punch fight as essentially portrayed in the movie. Braddock's story is compelling. It transcends his life from an early young light heavyweight with a strong chin, a good right hand, and not much else at 21 years old to a washed up, broken handed, on-relief dock worker at 29. But through perseverance, hard work, a love of and dedication to boxing, and a faithful manager (rare in those days, or any days) who never lost hope in him, Braddock finally got a shot again at the championship and real-life had a fairy tale ending. This is truly a 'feel good' book and story, and even better it's true. I enjoyed it immensely.

A Cinderella Story During Depression Era America

Jeremy Schapp does yeoman's work in capturing the backdrop and specifics which lead to James Braddock sensational upset of Max Baer to win the world heavyweight boxing title. This event may well be the most significant upset in the history of boxing. The question is, " how did this happen?" "Cinderella Man" answers that question in spades. The book not only captures the family histories and private lives of Braddock and Baer but also their managers, agents and promoters. Schapp does a great job of capturing the impact of the economic strains and constraints of depression era America and their impact on life, sports in general and boxing in particular. If anyone likes to enjoy a really interesting, good guy story, with a happy ending "Cinderella Man" will meet you needs. A terrific read !

Admiring tribute to a great comeback fighter

James J. Braddock wasn't a great Heavyweight Champ; he lost the title in his first defense bout after he'd won it. But his is, perhaps, the greatest comeback story of 20th century pugilism. The CINDERELLA MAN had heart.

Author Jeremy Schaap's book begins with the commencement of Braddock's comeback in June 1934 with his victory over "Corn" Griffin. Jim's last previous fight had been nine months earlier, at the end of which, with a right hand that had been repeatedly broken and numerous defeats under his belt, he was thought to be washed up. To the point of the Griffin match-up, he was barely able to feed his family with odd jobs on the New York and New Jersey docks and welfare help; it was the Depression, and Braddock's fortunes were at their rock bottom. Then, Schaap regresses in time to the period 1926-33 when Jim fought as a light heavyweight, almost winning that title in 1929. The author alternates the early Braddock saga with the same for the 1929-1934 career of Max Baer, who won the heavyweight title from Primo Canera, also in June 1934, thus setting up the confrontation that established Jim's fame and won him the heavyweight crown, the Braddock-Baer bout in June 1935.

Schaap's summaries of Braddock's eighty-three fights and Baer's forty-seven prior to their epic battle are, almost by necessity in a volume of only 276 pages, spotty in detail, yet are sufficient to establish the two fighters' characters. There is an adequate section of photographs, as well as the complete ring records of both Braddock and Baer and a complete listing of all the heavyweight division champs since John L. Sullivan. (Who is Hasim Rahman, champ in 2001, for Pete's sake?!)

For a boxing aficionado, CINDERELLA MAN is perhaps, despite its relative brevity, a must read. For those who otherwise couldn't care less about the sport, then viewing the excellent 2005 film CINDERELLA MAN, starring Russell Crowe in the title role, is the preferred, shorter option that provides all the basics. The visual version skips the preliminaries, starts with Braddock's last fight in 1933, his and his family's descent into near destitution, his enduring relationships with his wife Mae (Renee Zellweger) and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), his comeback contests versus Griffin, Lewis, and Lasky, and his win by decision over Baer in 15 gritty rounds.

Though it wasn't the author's intent, I gather, it was Baer's personality that came across as the more intriguing, at least for me. Max was a hard-punching, underachieving champ who fell more in love with the perks of his achievements - the fame, women, fine clothes, good food, showmanship - than with the commitment to his profession and hard work necessary to stay at the top. It's one of his quotes that stays with me:

"Listen, I don't want to be one of those champions who fights once a year. I need to fight. Dames are expensive." Truer words were never spoken.

The Good News Of Billy Graham

Patrick Doucette has written a very well researched book on the Reverend Billy Graham's classic sermons. The introduction provides a short history of Dr. Graham and then delivers 7 of his most famous sermons. If you've never heard Billy Graham preach and are looking to hear The Good News, check out this inspiring read.

Billy Graham has counseled presidents and kings. He has packed stadiums around the world with his heartfelt words and Southern Baptist fire. To hear his sermon is to truly hear the word of God. While you can no longer attend a true Billy Graham Crusade, (though you can hear his son Franklin), you can still be inspired by his teaching through this record of his most famous sermons.

Great for quiet meditation!

This book is great for quiet meditation or to read aloud with a group of individuals! There are 7 sermons in the book and the book is printed in larger size font. If you want to find out whether Billy Grahams books would be something you could get into or not, this is a great book to start with. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain insight into who God is and what our purpose is as Christians.

you won't get lost in all the technical asides and theoretical maelstroms so many datascience Python texts seem to love to spin

The simplest and clearest explanations out of nearly a dozen introductory python texts I have collected. Artfully crafted instructional progression with by far the most relevant and amusing analogies and example cases. It is interesting to note that this is basically the third formal edition of a constantly improving open-source resource that was initially restructured and reworked by a very gifted teacher to teach data analysis and data mining; if you have tried to work through Think Python you should be able to recognize the refinement resulting from the writer's having used previous editions of this text to teach tens of thousands of students. I keep going back to this book as a reference as well. It really does contain the concisest explanations, and I am recognizing more and more that the code blocks and larger processing methods he describes are paragons of industry approaches. Starting here will make your life so much simpler and your learning immediately so much more productive: you won't get lost in all the technical asides and theoretical maelstroms so many datascience Python texts seem to love to spin into and through. (I have also found the text to be a very helpful foundation for integrating all the open source videos and resources the author put together while teaching his classes through Coursera [and the University of Michigan]).

Excellent! The book is definitively for beginners who have ...

Excellent! The book is definitively for beginners who have no idea or know nothing about Python before. The author mixes basic concepts, without going deeply enough in some subjects. In addition, author provides teaching materials online pythonlearn.com. You can design your own learning path while having fun to navigate through the online course.

I have learnt many programming languages and read many books how to program. This is my favorite one because it is the easiest to read. The coding examples are easy to understand for the beginner. I am highly recommending this book for all non-programmers who want to learn the programming concept and to understand how program code works.

Good Overview - For Someone Seriously Interested in Becoming a Python Programmer

This book is not intended for professional programmers, and that's a very good thing for the rest of us. His primary motivation is to help readers understand how large amounts of data and information can be readily analyzed using Python. Another good point - he tells us that Python vocabulary is a rather small set of 'reserved words' with special meaning to Python. Unlike English, there is no ambiguity about what these words mean in Python.

Severance then describes how to start a conversation with Python - after first installing the Python software on your computer. Much/most of that information is offline, accessible through a link he provides. Continuing, >>> is Python's way of asking 'What do you want me to do next?' and the need for parentheses surround the description of what you want your computer to do. Python, like other programming languages, is very picky about syntax.

Then on to labeling/describing data to be used. Etc.

Overall, this book is a good overview for someone seriously interested in becoming a python programmer, not so good for someone just wanting to get a sense of what Python can do and how it would go about accomplishing such.
